Upgrading memory on 5100
Hi there guys, I have an Inspiron 5100 with 512MB, I would like to max it out at 1GB, I have heard different things on how I would do this, all I want to know is can I do it myself, and how much do you think it would cost? Is there a way to exchange memory modules as well if I needed to swap them out? Thanks,
Dreamer

Should I stick with crucial, or can I get something different? The reason I ask is because I'm in Canada, and I would prefer to pick up something local, thanks,

Well if it is like my 5100 you have two slots. Since you have 512 you probably have two 256MB sticks in there now. You'd have to buy two 512MB sticks and replace the two 256MB sticks in there. Of course, you might have one 512 in there now and you'd only have to buy one 512 stick to go in the empty slot, but unless you paid for a single dimm upgrade when you purchased the machine, Del probably gave you two 256MB sticks.
Look up your machine at www.crucial.com. About $120 for each 512 stick. Yes, you should be able to do this yourself. Your Dell Inspiron 5100 manual should give you short, but fairly complete instructions.

If it is the right product, it *should* work, but people talk about incompatibility from time to time. Just make sure the store you are buying it from will allow you to return it if it does not work in your system and give it a try. I don't see what that would hurt.

You can mix-and-match different sizes of RAM so, yes, a 512mb and a 128mb will work together just fine for a total of 640mb.
Here is a link to the memory installation instructions for the 5100.

Von, you can have 1 or 2 memory slots occupied - 128, 256, 512 -- doesn't matter.
As long as it's the same timing spec, you should be okay with mix/match.

Just as an update to my situation, I found some memory locally that is working fine in my Inspiron 5100......it's Kingmax ram, I have 2 sticks of 512MB 333MHZ ram, seems to work fine.....luckily they let me try it in the notebook before buying, which is what I recommend to anyone trying to find other ram for these notebooks......oh, and I paid $140 CDN each...which is pretty good for around me :)
