I have a Latitude D600. I have Quickset version 1.7.0 installed and the lastest audio driver update as of this post. Neither my mute or volume control buttons function. The volume display bar appears when these buttons are pressed but there is no change in the meter. The Fn+Page up ,Page dn, and end combinations also display the meter but do not change it. Judging by the number of similar posts and replies, I would expect a solution. Please advise.

I just developed this problem with my D800. I think it happened after doing a Windows Update (just the critical ones). Gee, I'm really surprised...

There must be a way to re-enable the volume/mute buttons next to the power button?

I suppose I could try uninstalling the updates, but that seems to me to be the wrong way to solve the problem. Especially since others have had the issue with apparently different causes, over a fairly long time period.

Perhaps it's rude to answer your own question...

I took another look for a new Dell Quickset update and what did I find? R75074.EXE Dated the 15th of this month, it apparently was released after I last checked.

Thanks Dell, hopefully this will solve the issues others have had as well.

Spoke too soon! Booted OK a few times yesterday after updating Quickset, but today I'm back where I was before! :-(

The volume bar pops up when the buttons are depressed, but no changes are made. Aaaargghh!

I followed sym's advice and installed the logitech iTouch drivers. While not the best solution, it does get the volume butons to work.

I see this post is growing up ;-)

Unfortunately the only one solution that keeps working on my laptop is the one provided by Logitech

I'm going to migrate now to XP (I have 2K)... I really hope it will goes better.. and that Dell is working on this.

I have a brand new Inspiron XPS, and my volume buttons affect the volume, but the bars don't show on screen.  This can be a real hassle.  I hope DELL finds a solution.  Paying $3,000 for a laptop that has problems like this (simple, but frustrating) makes me want to scream!

There was an icon in my tray for the finger pad.  It is gone, and it may be related.  How do I get it back?

Volume controls on my D800 (win2k) have started working again... not sure, but seems to be after a 'windows update'. However, they're quirky... if I don't allow the boot to complete all the way before starting my email for instance, the old behaviour returns until I reboot. Mess up a logon password to a share - same thing. But for the most part, they're working again after being bejiggered for a few months.

Funny, I was suspicious a windows update killed them in the first place. Now they're working after another windows update. Coincidence??

I just received a new D600 2 weeks ago, and have the intermittent (mostly not working) volume buttons problem described here.  Very annoying for a brand new system.

But, I have found something, and would like others to confirm.  When I remove the laptop battery, and boot from AC, the volume keys ALWAYS work fine.  (After fully booting, I can then insert the battery, and the keys continue to work.)  When I boot with the battery in place (with or without AC power), the volume keys tend not to work.

I believe this problem is a power management / audio driver conflict, which Dell needs to fix.  Can others try this, and report back?  Enough consistent results should point Dell in the right direction.

Try running the audio tests in Dell Diagnostics. These interactive audio tests are designed to narrow down the problem to either the software or hardware. The tests are independent of Windows and drivers, meaning it doesn't matter if those are working correctly or not. To run Dell Diagnostics

1. Restart the computer and tap the f12 key as soon as it starts to boot up .

2. Select 'Diagnostic' from the boot menu. The computer will run its pre-boot assessment tests (PSA) before Dell Diagnostics starts. During the PSA you will hear some tones through the system speaker but this does not adequately test the audio hardware. Dell Diagnostics plays an instrumental piece of music complete with drums, so if you only hear some tones then you have only run the PSA.

3. Dell Diagnostics should open after the PSA tests, or you should see an option to open it. If you have ever reformatted your entire hard drive then Dell Diagnostics will no longer be there as an option. In that case run it from the Drivers and Utilities (Resource) CD if you have one.

4. Select 'Custom', then the audio tests. (At this point - after you have opened Dell Diagnostic custom - if you can't find the option to select the audio tests that is a symptom of a failed audio chip.)

5. The tests will run. Alternate between using headphones and listening to speakers in case only one signal path is working.
The tests will play some audio and ask you whether you heard it.

6. If you don't hear the music during the test it definitely means there is a hardware failure somewhere in the system. In this case Dell will repair the computer if it is still under warranty.

7.If you do hear the audio during the test but not when you boot back into Windows, that almost always means the hardware is okay but there is a problem with the audio driver or with Windows.

8. Error codes: If you answer 'no' to any question that the test asks you, the test generates an error code that can tell a Dell technician that you answered 'no' to that question. The test does not know the exact component that has gone bad. Before answering 'no' to a question, make note of the circumstances at that point so you will know in general what the error code means.

Ok, for some time now i have had the same problem with my Dell Latitude D800, The volume control buttons and the LED lights like the power light and hdd indicator, along with the Capslock light and stuff dont work.

I googled around and hadnt found any answers reguarding to driver problems, nor any other solution.

So, i took the panel off that is covering the power button and stuff.
Pulled out the wires going into the laptops motherboard, and pluged it back it, and made sure it was firmly placed in its slot.
Turned the laptop back on, and the lights showed up and the volume control worked :)

Heres how to do it:
1) Turn computer off (not yet, read the rest)
2) Remove panel covering power button and stuff
     - Get a flat head screwdriver or a knife of some sort and place it in the gap to the left of the LATITUDE | D800 print on the laptop.
     - now lift it up, and remove it
3) Unplug it (the connection on the right), and put it back in (mine was really loose)
4) Put the panel back on
5) Power the laptop on :D

This should fix it, it did so for me, but no guarentee's for you
