Vostro 3460 Screen Black

Question

Hi, I have a 1.5 year old Vostro 3460 that is used as a business laptop. The motherboard was replaced in July 2013 by Dell and it was working fine up to about September of this year.  First the WiFi would quit unexpectedly, then the screen. I could be through a remote client, or writing an email when the screen may decide to go black. So I start it up and it is still black. BUT, the keyboard and fan turn on (the keyboard is backlit). It would do this for about a week. Now, within the last week, the screen will not turn on at all upon startup. I press D+Power and the screen runs through the LCD test with the various colors. When it is finished, it remains black, dark black, not black from the LCD. Dell support recommends me to have the screen replaced but I feel that is unnecessary given it runs through the color test fine.  They quote me $200 top replace and my company is not ready to spend that money as it is less than 2 years old. Any advice on how to fix this?

Hi gtab55,

If the LCD BIST test is passing it should be an issue related to system board or the display cable. To confirm you will need to connect an external display/monitor to the system and check if the system is starting up.

Hi Ravi,

I connected another monitor to the laptop and pressed FN+F1 to change display output and still, nothing happened, I waited approximately 30 seconds for it to start, swiped my finger to let it log on, and tried it again but to no avail. The LCD test worked fine while connected to the monitor.

Hi gtab55, Sorry for the delayed response. It seems like an issue related to system board. I would suggest you to replace it.
