WAY too expensive

It seems to me that the XPS and XPS Gen 2 are WAY to expensive compaired to HP/Compaq laptops.  You can get alot more out of an HP or Cpmpaq now for hundreds less than you can a Dell... Can someone explain (even though it's problably one of those "market" things)

Actually, speaking of cheap components, my inspiron 5100 has broken 6 times in 6 months.

Cheaper components, poorer reliability, and even poorer customer support.

I've had my Insprion for 1.5 yrs and had 0 problems, except for the overheat issue that was easily dealt with..I use this thing 5+ hours a day..Love it!!

while in the first year its crazy i had to send it back to dell once in three months to repair

im still going to keep this machine

cuz ive been thru so much with it, prob gonna frame it on the wall haha

overheat is one main headache for inspiron series

for what i use mine is inspiron 4000 from 5 years ago

my friends got compaq and they use it on their bed even without worrying about overheats

while i put a 12v fan from those desktop computer cases besides my inspiron and still have to worry the issue

now its dead, i can't work with it anymore

im planning to get a new machine rather than replacing some ancient components for 100 quid

any new improvements about the overheat problem with new dell laptops nowadays?

You won't get anywhere near the performance from a Compaq or HP that the XPS Gen 2 can give you.

Just because a video card has "256mb" of dedicated video means it isn't comparable.

By that logic, a 9600 256mb card is the equivelent of an 6800 Ultra 256mb.  Also, Pentium Ms are as powerful, if not moreso, than Prescotts in gaming.  Having Gigahurtz doesn't mean anything anymore.

But if they offer 2GB RAM, 3.6 GHz, a 256 MB graphics card.... The Gen 2 goes up to 2.13

Depends, are you a gamer?  If not, then don't buy the XPS - buy the 9200, which is dirt cheap right now.

Video cards are very different, go to www.tomshardware.com or www.anandtech.com and check out video card reviews.  They have extensive benchmarks on mobile cards too, so you can see what value you are getting.

Well then, again, no 256mb video card is created equal.  Get something with GDDR3 (otherwise known as the Mobility X800 or the Go 6800 (or Ultra, for that case) to ensure most bleeding edge technology.

I'll be sticking with my MR9800 for a while, she'll do well for HL2 and subsequent modifications.
