Hi sab81 / Nancy,

Click on this link http://pages.suddenlink.net/downloaddell/WebcamViewer.exe and download WebcamViewer to your desktop. Double-click WebcamViewer to open the application. It should show Integrated Webcam as a choice. There should be a down arrow. If you do not see Integrated Webcam, click the down arrow. Is it listed? If yes, choose it. Then click the Connect button in WebcamViewer. You should see yourself. Please share the findings.

I saved the link as you instructed to my desktop but when I double-clicked, there the window is blank.  When I clicked on the down arrow, there was nothing listed to select in either box so I am still unable to access my webcam.  If I was a tech, I would try opening the laptop to see if the card or cable or whatever connects the intergrated camera from the lid to the computer is loose but do not want to risk any damage to the laptop.

Thanks for trying.  Hope someone else who has encountered this issue has found some additional information that would be helpful.

Have a good day,

Nancy

Hi sab81,

This seems to be an issue with the webcam and would require a replacement. Is your system under warranty? If yes, then please provide the service tag of the computer and the first and last name as it appears on the account via private message (click my username and then click Send a Private Message) so that I can check the further course of action.

Hi Nancy,

This seems to be a hardware fault and the webcam might have to be replaced. I reviewed your previous responses and seems that the system is out of warranty. In case it is in warranty, then please provide the service tag of the computer and the first and last name as it appears on the account via private message (click my username and then click Send a Private Message) so that I can check the further course of action.

If the warranty has expired, then you may get in touch with our Out of Warranty dept. Here is the link http://dell.to/14pwG9m (applicable for USA only). If you live in a different country, then click on the link http://dell.to/11iojrK -> choose -> Contact Us on the top left hand sideChoose the country you currently reside in to get the contact information.

So try this before you do anything.

For those of you with a Dell Lap top and for whatever you do you can't get the integrated webcam to work and it is not showing up in the device manager there is a simple solution.  Dell seems to have no idea as to what to do and the so called experts tell you to reload/delete webcam central, then go to their stupid trouble shooting page and do a driver download except there are no drivers for it.  It is inside Windows 7.

The solution is to remove the bezel, take the 4 screws off the screen and un tape the ribbon holding the webcam ribbon.  Then unplug it and plug it back in.  Boom, your done.

Thank you for your reply.  I also think it has something to do with the camera just not being identified after a security update.  I am hesitant to try this myself with having the correct tools & someone available that is more computer savy as I am afraid of shorting out the electronics.  I would rather have no webcam than no computer.

Have to see if there are clear instructions on how to do this safely.

Again...thanks!

Nancy

You Tube has instructions as to how to remove the screen.  It is very easy.  The actual webcam is on a small bar that lifts right out of the tab holding In on.  Just lift it off from the back first until it is free from the ribbon.  Just unplug the ribbon and put it back put the tape back on and that is it.

Forgot to mention:  Lift the tape off from the back of the little camera bar and pull it over to the front until the ribbon is free.  You don't want to remove the tape from the ribbon itself.  You will see what I mean when you get in there,

Thanks again.  Yes I did find YouTube instructions & will watch a few times before I take the bezel off.  The screws are easy to identify.  It is me I have no confidence in !  :-)

This is Mike.  Yesterday my wife's Dell; 14z' webcam disappeared and was not listed in the imaging devices.  I am pretty sure it was a windows update that killed it.  I turned off the auto updates on her unit and did the unplug thing.  Battery out and power off and it came back.

Thanks for update Mike.  This makes me more convinced that it is a Windows Security update that caused my problem.  I am waiting for one of my daughters to visit to be here when I attempt the repair.  Just in case, I may purchase a new webcam [unable to find any in parts at Dell but did see one on E-bay] in case it is my webcam & not the update that is the problem.
