Webcam or WebCan't

I have an Inspiron 17R 5737 running Windows 7 Professional. It is out of warranty by 6wks. I recently installed Skype and discovered that I have no driver for the built-in Y3PX8 camera/mic. After spending more time on support.dell.com than I want to admit, I also discovered that Dell did not install Webcam Central or any webcam driver initially.  Furthermore, there is no Imaging category listed under Devices in my Control Panel.  Next step per the website was to contact Tech Support.  I finally called Tech Support.  The agent was spinning his wheels and mine looking for a fix. He finally said to hang up the phone and wait for him to call me back.  It would seem fairly straightforward for the agent to provide a link to download/install the proper driver for my webcam.  Any suggestions?

Non-Nerd,

Did you recently install/reinstall the operating system? If yes, did you install the Dell System Software(if applicable) and the chipset drivers first? If not, the rest of the drivers will fail to install. How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order

Windows 7/8 is supposed to provide the webcam drivers for most Dell computers. If you system needs webcam drivers, go to Drivers and Downloads enter your service tag, then select your operating system. If your system needs webcam drivers, they'll be listed under Input.

(Windows 8)How to make the webcam work with help from this youtube. You have to open the Camera app first, and then click Settings on the charm bar to see where you can give the app permission to use the webcam.

Troubleshooting the Dell Webcam and Dell Webcam Central Software

You can try this file, also known as Dell Webcam Central.

Make a system restore point.

Start, control panel, device manager, Go to the USB Controller section and click the + sign. Go to each USB Root Hub. right click on it, left click uninstall.

Restart your computer. When you login, the new hardware wizard will reinstall everything. Please be patient, it could take up to 2 minutes.

Try the webcam and see if it works.

If no, then the webcam became detached from the motherboard, usually near the webcam

Thank you Rockstar Rick.  I haven't touched the operating system.  I already went to Drivers and Downloads and entered service tag, etc.  Webcam was not listed.  I will try your suggestion making a system restore point and uninstalling each USB Root Hub etc. Before I do that, please answer the following: If the webcam became detached from the motherboard, will the new hardware wizard reinstall webcam driver/software?  If Dell forgot to load webcam driver/software initially, what next?  Thanks.

Non-Nerd,

Sometimes a driver comes corrupt and by removing the usb root hubs, it reinstalls the driver to get the webcam working properly. If the above procedure does not work, the my guess would be the webcam came loose from the motherboard, usually near the top of the screen, near the webcam.

If you carefully pry off the bezel(see the video below), you will then see 2 Phillips screws. Remove the 2 screws at the top of the screen, you'll see the webcam and the plug. Unplug the webcam, then plug it back in. The webcam should work.
