What is BIOS and how do I access it?

LOL, I know that this may sound like a stupid question, but I have just recently heard of BIOS, and I cannot quite figure out what it is.  I have learned a lot about computers over the last few years, but apparently, BIOS was not one of the things that I learned about.  Can anyone help me?  Thanks so much!

BIOS stands for Basic Input-Output System

Put simply, it is what allows your operating system to "talk" to your computer's hardware and for you to control certain settings that affect the way your operating system uses your computer's hardware.

Accessing it varies both by manufacturer and model, but for all of the Dell laptops I have used, it is accessed by pressing the function key "F2" when the computer first starts up (aka post).

Some of the early versions of the BIOS for older models did not have the F2 Entry. For those you use Fn+F1.
