Where and what RAM to buy? #newbie :)
Hey everyone! First post on this forum!
I'm really wanting to upgrade my ram. Have been told by a Dell expert I can get 2 x 4gb of ram but just can't work out 'which'. There's lots of 'RAM's out there, I'm guessing there should be a Dell kind and maybe one designed for my laptop?
Really don't know at all lol. My Service Tag is: <ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy>
P6200 processor
And I'm using an Inspiron laptop
Thank you ever so much!
Liam.

Which Inspiron laptop do you have? what's the model number? which operating system do you have? is it 32 or 64bit?
You can use a freeware tool like HWinfo (preferably the portable version) to find out exactly what type of memory is currently installed on your system, and what's the max that your motherboard supports.

your system probably uses a Pentium, an i3, or i5 processor
with an Intel HM57 chipset
Compatible Memory:
DDR3 204-pin small outline dual inline memory modules (SODIMMs)
Listed as "DDR3 SODIMMs" for short
The memory should be Unbuffered and NON-ECC
Available Speeds:
PC3-8500 (DDR3 1066MHz)
PC3-10600 (DDR3 1333MHz)
PC3-12800 (DDR3 1600MHz)
PC3-14900 (DDR3 1866MHz)
This system configuration doesn't seem to support anything faster than DDR3 PC3-8500 (DDR3 1066MHz). You can still install faster, or fancier memory, but it won't run any faster than 1066MHz due to CPU / motherboard limitations.
You do need to buy a matched pair or kit (i.e. 2 x 4GB identical SODIMMs) however for optimal dual channel performance.
Where to buy? Online.
Try Amazon, Newegg, TigerDirect, Bestbuy, ebay
Brands:
Kingston, Crucial, Corsair, Hynix (Hyundai)
You can currently buy a
Crucial 8GB Kit (4GBx2) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) SODIMM 204-Pin
on amazon for $66.99 with free shipping
