ddrow,

Thank you for using Dell's Community Forum.

Why do you need to know where the BIOS chip is?

Hi Corey,

thank you very much for your support. Like i already wrote:

i bought a few days ago a Latitude Cpx J and i have problems with it. FActs are:

It has no battery, no memory, no CDROM.
I bought a used 32 MB SD RAM ( 133 MHZ ), and all i saw after installing it and pushing the power button was a black screen ( but the screen has power ) and a blinking underline character in the left corner at the top of the screen.
First i thought was: The memory is not OK, so i went to a computer shop, where we tried another 144 pin RAM Module ( 133 MHZ - 128 MB ) but we had the same result.
I called the DELL Hotline but there also nobody could help me.
Now i need to know. What could it be? The RAM? Maybe corrupt BIOS? Does anybody of know what reason this could be?

What i´m trying to find out now is if its the BIOS or maybe another corrupt thing.....or maybe just a bad battery? My problem is that i bought it used for around 100$ and a new Mainboard will cost in Ebay around 150$. I dont want to buy such an expensive thing, to find out that the reason for this errors is something other. I hope you know what i mean. Sorry again for my bad engl.

Greets from Germany

Before consigning this to the trash can, try a PC100 144 pin NonParity SODIMM in both slots one at a time. PC133 modules are not all compatible with this model; also CPxJs are noted for developing bad memory slots. Can you enter BIOS Setup with F2, or Fn+F1? If that is possible, remove the Harddrive and peripheals, and using a Floppy drive in the bay with a W98 Boot Disk and only your AC Adapter connected, try a Floppy only Boot. I doubt it is your BIOS Chip at fault, as a problem with it usually manifests itself with a brief appearance of the lights and then a total shutdown. It is soldered into the board on the CPxJs and is not considered changeable as it was on the earlier CPiD/A  models;knowing where it is is not helpful.
