White screen after installing Linux on Inspiron 6000

Question

Hi, I am getting a white screen after installing linux on my 6000 (15'4 WUXGA screen) notebook. Immediately after installing linux,i got white screen directly. After modifying initab file, i can log into linux using command line. But whenever i try to use 'startx' the screen will become white and never come back to command line. In this situation i have to reboot the system using power button. Nothing works at this point. While installing linux, i got the message 'monitor type unknown' message (While linux does something called 'probing'), but installation was successful.   Does anybody help me with this?.   Thanks,

Perhaps it has something to do with Linux distribution? I have Suse 10.0 and runs ok...
