Windows 7 - Windows Startup Repair - Computer Unable to Start
I received a notification today at 5pm, June 18, 2011, that my computer (Studio 1558) was unable to start once I turned on my pc. I waited about 5 mins, and it turned on after the attempt of restoring repairs. However, I got several notifications like "Dell Dock was unable to Start," "DXLS Unable to Start," and so on. It was like my whole pc was shutting down. Then I went on Dell.com, about to try to get some technical support, but my computer automatically restarted. Now it won't let me open up some of my programs on my computer. What is going on!? I didn't want to call Dell since they charge $59. Please help. Is it possible it could be related to my battery that's dying?

I fixed my computer! The solution relies in Restoring System Files from a Restore Point, which can be found through searching in the control panel. This virtually sends your pc back in time and undo anything you did in that time period. As long as your desktop loads, try this method.

PS. This could also be the result of a virus/trojan.

Try tapping F8 when the Dell splash screen appears. Select Safe Mode from the menu.
If you get into safe mode ok then run a command prompt with elevated privileges, type "chkdsk c: /R", without the quotes. Press enter. Type the "Y" key and then enter in response to the prompt.
Then type "exit" without the quotes and press enter to close the window.
Restart the system and let chkdsk run.
Else use F12 at power-on to boot the diagnostics and test the hard drive.
If the hard drive is good then use the options to restore to a point prior to the point where this issue occurred.

Try performing a clean install, see link to my wiki below for full instructions. Don't format in your case and recover all your files from windows.old.
