Windows cannot configure this wireless connection

my 1501 laptop use to work perfectly.  then i got earthlink wifi for when i am in philadelphia to use the laptop

i live near atlantic city nj-not that that matters.  anyway, i had a hard time getting on line with earthlink after 5pm (it was them, not me i found out from other people later) anyway, i was on the phone for hours trying to get connected in philly, the earthlink people changed alot of my settings.  now i was just on vacation with the laptop in fla where there is no earthlink wifi, i was in a big condo building, with loads of available unlocked routers, but when i would try to get on one of them i kept getting this message

Windows cannot configure this wireless connection
If you have enabled another program to manage this wireless connection,
use that software.
If you want Windows to configure this wireless connection, start the Wireless Zero Configuration (WZC) service.  For more information about starting the WZC service, see article 871122 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base on the microsoft.com web site.

and when you see the page with networks available the apply button is not available to click, it is very dull white.  is there anyone that can help me get back to being able to use this screen?

Open the Dell Wireless Utility (it is either in Start > All Programs or Start > Control Panel (Classic View), or if you have the icon with the ascending bars in the system tray, right click the icon).   Remove the check mark next to the box that says something like "Let this utility manage my wireless netowrks".   Now open Network Connections, right click your wireless connection, select Properties, click on the Wireless Networks tab, and put a check mark in the box to let Windows manage your wireless connections.

there is no wireless network tab after you click properties?  when i right click on the little icon in the tray there is a wireless network tab and it is checked to let windows manage it.  I think earthlink did something when they made me change a bunch of numbers??

I do not respond by email and I strongly suggest that you edit your last post and remove your email address.  Posting your email address on a public forum is an invitation for spammers to start filing your email box with spam and potentially virus laden emails.

The Dell Wireless Utility is either in Control Panel (in classic view) - Wireless Coniguration Utility or in Start > All Programs > Dell Wireless Utility, as I said before.  If the Dell Wireless Utility already running, it may be in the System Tray (lower right hand corner) and is an icon with 3 ascending bars.  You apparently clicked on the Windows utility before (computer monitor with waves emaniting from it).  That is NOT the one you need to change.

Thank you, after being on the phone with earthlink for over an hour, to try to get them to undo whatever they told me to do.  I think you got it!!!!!!!!  I had to put my code back in to get into my own home router but thats okay!  Maybe it will still in there and i won't have to keep doing that everytime. but i usually use my desk top when i am at home anyway.  I am sure you can tell i am not that computer savvy.  Thank you again very much.  Franny
