Easiest fix is to buy a $10 usb network adapter and disable the built in one which is only a G adapter. I added a N adapter to match my N router on my 1764 model and Internet was much better. Like this--
It could also be a problem with your router. If you still have just a G router, upgrade to an N. Or run the Network and Sharing Center Troubleshooter to test.
