Wireless problem (inspiron 7720)

Hi, I have dell inspiron 17R-SE-7720

wireless card: intel centrino wireless-n 2230

router: Thomson TG782i

I have problems with wifi.

When I’m sitting 1-2 meters from router it works great but when I move 5 meters in my room the connection disappears (at the beginning it shows full signal but I can’t open web page and then after some time it has poor signal and then it disappears). I tried reinstalling and updating drivers but it didn’t help. I tried everything and nothing works. I tried to install drivers from Intel’s page, Dell’s page and also with some program and nothing worked. The wireless encryption is WPA2-PSK. I also have Toshiba and galaxy s3 and on both devices internet works great in my room. Can you tell me what the problem is?

Thank you!

Hi flash2460,

You can try uninstalling and re installing wireless driver:

  • Click on 'Manage' and click on 'Device Manager'.
  • Expand 'Network' and right click on the wireless driver.
  • Click on 'uninstall'.
  • Once the driver is uninstalled, click on 'Start' and click on 'Control panel'.
  • Click on 'Programs and features' and look for the application of Intel 2230 wireless card.
  • Right click on it and click on 'uninstall'.
  • Restart the system.
  • Click on the link: http://dell.to/R5BRRy
  • Click on 'Download Now' and select 'Single file download'.
  • Click on 'Continue'.
  • Click on 'Save' and save the driver on the desktop.
  • Right click on the driver from the desktop and click on 'Run as administrator'.
  • Install the driver following the on screen instructions.
  • Restart the system and check if the issue is fixed.

You can also update the BIOS if the issue still persists:

Please find the link for BIOS update: http://dell.to/VZby7m

Note: The ac adapter should be connected and the battery should be at least 10% charged. Please disconnect all the external devices connected to the system before updating the BIOS. Please save all the unsaved data as your system will restart automatically while updating the BIOS.

  • Click on the above link.
  • Click on 'Download Now'.
  • Select "Single-file Download" and click on "Continue".
  • Click on "Run" and follow the on screen instructions.

Keep me updated. Please reply for any further questions.

Hi,

You can try changing the properties of the network card in Device manager. Below are the steps:

  • Click on 'Start' and right click on 'Computer'.
  • Click on 'Manage' and click on 'Device Manager'.
  • Go to 'Network adapter' and right click on the wireless card driver and click on 'Properties'.
  • Click on 'Advanced' and select “Channel” and change it to '11' on the right side.
  • Select 'Roaming aggressiveness' and change is to 'Highest'.
  • Click on 'Apply' and then 'Ok'.
  • Check if the issue is fixed.
Note: The wireless card settings may vary from one card to another.

If the above steps do not fix the issue, you can try the below steps:

Boot your system in 'Safe Mode with Networking':

  • Restart your system and keep tapping 'F8' as soon as the Dell logo appears.
  • Highlight 'Safe Mode with Networking' using up and down arrow keys and press enter.
  • Check the functionality of the Internet in 'Safe Mode with Networking'.

Keep me posted. Please reply for any further questions.

Hi,

Thank you for the quick reply. Since the system is working fine in 'Safe mode with Networking', there is a possibility that the anti-virus installed on your system is causing this issue. Which anti-virus are you using on your system? You can try disabling the firewall of the anti-virus and check if that makes any difference. Alternatively, create a new user account and check if that works fine:

  • Click on 'Start' and type 'User account' in search menu.
  • Click on 'User Accounts' in the search list.
  • Click on 'Manage User Accounts'.
  • Click on 'Manage another account'.
  • Click on 'Create a new account'.
  • Type in the name and select 'Administrator'.
  • Click on 'Create account'.
  • Log off and log in into the new user account.
  • Check if the wireless works fine.

Keep me updated. Please reply in case you have any further questions.

I also created another account and it didn't help :((  is it possible that driver is bad? if i had bad drive would it still work in safe mode?

Thank you!

Hi,

I appreciate your efforts. Had the driver been corrupted, system would have behaved the same way in 'Safe Mode with Networking'; the same goes for a bad hard drive. I will recommend you to restore your system back to factory settings:

Note: PC restore will lead to data (pictures, documents, programs, music) loss. Please perform a data backup prior to this step. Please disconnect any external peripherals (printer, scanner or any USB device) as well.

 To perform PC restore:-

  1. Restart PC, keep tapping 'F8' as soon as the Dell logo appears.
  2. Advanced Boot Options menu appears, ‘Repair your Computer' is highlighted, press Enter. (Use the arrow keys to highlight your choice).
  3. Windows is loading files screen appears. Wait for it to load.
  4. 'System Recovery Options' prompt appears. Specify the language and keyboard input that you want, and then click ‘Next’.
  5. Log in as a user who has administrative credentials; select the username from the drop-down list, type the password and click OK.
  6. 'Choose a Recovery Tool Window' appears, select 'Dell Data Safe Restore and Emergency Backup'.
  7. The Welcome screen will show 2 options; 'Restore computer and preserve my new or changed files' and 'Select other System Backup and more options'. Select the second option (Select other System Backup and more options) and click 'Next'.
  8. The next window shows these options; 'Backup Files and folders' and 'Restore my computer'. Select ‘Restore my computer’.
  9. Select the 'Factory Image' and click ‘Next’.
  10. The next window shows 2 options; 'Preserve new or changed files before restoring to selected System Backup' and 'Restore without preserving new or changed files'. Select the second option (Restore without preserving new or changed files) and click 'Next'.
  11. A prompt appears stating that your computer is about to be restored all data currently on your computer will be deleted and replaced with your selected Full System Backup. If an Emergency File & Folder Backup was created, it will still be saved in the location you selected. Click 'Yes, continue' and click 'Next'.
  12. PC restore will initiate. Once done, click 'Restart'.
  13. Follow the onscreen instructions to create a user account.

Keep me updated. Please reply in case you have any further questions.
