XPS 12 9Q33 USB and Driver Problems
First off, I did place a support ticket for one of these but I guess almost two weeks isn't enough time to get support.
First problem: I tried to update to the new Win 8.1 but during the installation I couldn't get pass network/internet connection. Laptop would never connect. It would always time out. I had no problems before. I did a auto search on Dell's site to see what drivers I needed. There were three drivers listed; two for chipset and 1 for network/Bluetooth. I downloaded the chipset drivers and installed but every time, the driver scan kept coming back that I still needed them. As for the network/Bluetooth drive, there was never a driver link for download.
The other problem I've run into is having USB devices consistently dropping out especially during some what heavy file transfers between USB devices. Generally, the source USB device would come back as a drop out yet it is still listed most time in Win Explorer. This isn't just one or two drives. I've had this happen to 6 different USB devices such as thumb drives and portables. I did the Dell's online diagnostic scan for USB and it came back as good but that doesn't mean anything. I just can't tell whether this is a hardware problem or a Windows driver problems. Chipset is supposedly up to date.

Why would I need to download every drive? Isn't that the purpose of Dell's drivers and download page. It tells me which drivers I need. So, every time I need a new driver, I have to download them all, I just can't see that.

No progress. Still same issues minus the Win 8.1 problem. That worked out finally. But, still have thumbs and portables dropping out. All drivers are updated. Posted a ticket back in Oct with Dell support and still have not received a reply. So, I guess once you get your system, you are on your own. Last Dell I ever buy. I can deal with issues if there is support. No support is big fail. So far three support tickets and not a response in 3 months.

USB resolution:
Still no response from Dell on this. It could be that they are too busy spamming with spam mail to answer tech support tickets. But through some testing of sorts, I've determined that the USB ports do not and will not provide enough power to run multiple devices. I bought a new laptop cooler with a built in USB hub. I ran into the same problems as before when trying to copy or move a large amount of data. The cool also has a power adapter port. After applying additional power to the USB hub, all went well. I was able to copy almost a 100GB of data from one USB portable to another without any problems. So, expecting power hungry portables even those with just one USB connect, isn't going to work long if you have multiples plugged into the USB ports or a USB hub without additional power. I couldn't even plug one portable in one USB port and a second in the other without one dropping. So, that's the only solution that I've been able to find to resolve this.
Thanks Dell, I did the work for you. So you can delete or continue to ignore my support ticket from Oct.
