XPS 14Z battery issues

Hello,

I bought DELL XPS 14Z from Best Buy in May 2012 (XPS L412Z to be precise). But I am dealing with battery problems recently. I am going on a 13-hour flight trip for Thanksgiving and I am hoping to use my laptop on the flight (at least for 4-5 hours).

What are my options? Should I get a new battery from Dell? And, I realize the battery for XPS is in a weird slot. I have been dealing with DELL laptops for 12 years but this battery setup seems to be bit different.

Or, should I get an external battery source. But, I read TSA may not allow it on-flight.

Any thoughts on this topic are appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi xanadu33,

You can improve the battery life by turning off or reduce any programs that have higher power usage on the system. If you are going on a long trip, click on the link below to view the tips to help your laptop's battery power last longer:

You have not described the problems with the battery. Since the battery is about 18 months old, it is probably wearing out. As a battery ages, the time on battery is shorter. It will probably have to be replaced soon. Check the Battery meter utility.

Thanks Prateek. i will keep that in mind.

Mary, I checked the Battery Meter and it says that the battery is performing normally. Also, I noticed that the McAfee is running ismore often than normal these days (not sure why - that is the next project :) ) - that could be causing the battery burn-out too (?).

Any other ideas on external battery source that could be used on a US flight - even if the laptop is on for a couple of hours, i am hoping to extend its life further. This is a long flight!

Thanks again.

Hi xanadu33,

Please follow the steps mentioned in my earlier post for a better usage of the laptop battery.  The battery on the system xps14z is a Field Replacement Units, which requires help of a service technician to replace the battery. You may consider getting a battery power pack that might be of help.
