What the dell rep said is not true. I purchased a precision 5510 and I put 2x 16GB DDR4 2100's in it and it has been running flawless.
That being said it may not support DDR3. The thing to do is look at the CPU you want to get and cross reference that on Intel's web site. For example the Xeon I got in my 5510 supports 64GB of RAM but being there is only two slots it will max out at 32GB. I was initially concerned that dell might have handicapped it to 16GB but they did not.
I do not know why dell does not offer 32GB of ram for the 5510 but it works. I cannot verify if the same is true for the XPS.

Hi Kyse,
If you wish to , you can definitely go ahead with 32 gb, but Dell has never tested with that limit.
if there are any issues in future (if the system in warranty), it wont be covered under warranty.
