XPS 15 9550 SD card reader stops working after sleep

After a cold boot, I'm able to copy gigabytes of files from a 16GB SD card in the internal card reader, even with many other programs running. But when I put the computer to sleep mode and then wake it up, I'm only able to copy a file or two at a time before I get a "There is not enough memory to complete this operation" error, followed by an automatic dismount and remount of the SD card. The only way to get it working again is a restart. The SD card works fine, as I don't have this issue when using an external SD card reader. There is plenty of memory free (6GB of 16GB). I've reinstalled the card reader driver from Dell.

Any ideas on what to try? Seems like a BIOS or driver issue to me.

Hi Dantees,

Good day.

When did the issue start? Is that a SanDisk card?

Have you tried different make of cards just in case.

Simultaneously please try this step and  let us know how it goes.

I right-clicked on the SD card device in device manager under Disk Drives, click properties, then go to the policies tab and then select "best performance".

Await your response.

Regards

Hello, I've had this issue since I got the machine back in December. It is with a Sandisk card. I don't have any other brand cards, but I was able to replicate it with a different model and size Sandisk card.

I found that the issue occurs even when no other programs are running (12GB memory free). It works just fine after cold boot, but after sleep and wake it doesn't work. At most a few files are copied and then I get the out of memory error. Sometimes no files are copied.

I tried your idea about changing the policy to "better performance" but see no improvement.

I couldn't find that this was reported as a Windows 10 issue, so it seems like the card reader is not being initialized properly after sleep.

Please try updating the VIDEO drivers and chipset drivers if not yet.
We have seen similar issues being reported with sandisk, of course nothing in particular with windows 10.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks, I confirmed I'm running the latest video and chipset drivers, but it's still not working.

Hi Dantee6,

Please update the BIOS from http://dell.to/1n3X2po

If the issue persists, try the following:

  • If the system was working fine at some point earlier, then perform a system restore and check - see this link on how to perform system restore - http://bit.ly/1JEw2ov
  • Check if the issue occurs in both Auto and Manual sleep modes.
  • Restart the system and check in safe mode (if possible) - see this link on how to restart the system in safe mode - http://bit.ly/1JQ7OaG
  • Create a new local Admin account and check the system functionality there - see this link on how to - http://bit.ly/1JoFhcw
  • If the issue still occurs, then perform a system refresh - http://bit.ly/1P81h34

If the issue is unresolved, then let us know and we shall advise on further course of action.

Keep us updated.

I updated to the latest BIOS, did not help.

This issue has been present since I received the computer, so system restore will not help.

The issue occurs in both auto and manual sleep modes.

In safe mode, the SD card reader is not initialized or accessible, so I cannot test that. Doesn't even appear in Device Manager.

I tried a new local admin account, and the issue was immediately reproduced there.

I have not tried system refresh yet since this takes quite a lot of work to reinstall all of my programs. I guess it's my only option at this point?

Hello again. I've finally had a chance to perform a system refresh. Unfortunately that did not fix this issue either. I've also noticed that even when I do a cold boot, although I can read and write to the card, it will still give random disconnects or not detect the card (happens with multiple cards). Then once I put the computer to sleep and wake it back up, then it won't read and write at all (copies a few megabytes and then disconnects, every time).

At this point I'm wondering if it's a hardware issue. What do you think?

I am also seeing the same problems - with the latest updates of all system drivers and bios that are available.

I didn't notice before because I never tried to use the reader.

I ended up having to get a motherboard replacement. That seems to have fixed the problem. So I think it's a hardware issue, not software.
