XPS 15 (L501X) RAM upgrade, boot failure, plz help

Hi all,

The last few days I've been trying to replace the 2x 2gb RAM in my XPS 15 (L501X) December 2010 laptop by 2x 4gb (Corsair CMSO8GX3M2A1333C9).

This should be possible based on the processor (Intel 460M) and the chipset, but somehow it isn't. Both with Windows 7 and Windows 8 my laptop just won't boot. Both give an error just after the Windows logo appears. Replaced it with the old 2x 2gb and it boots normally.

Loaded BIOS defaults, didn't help. Erased CMOS by removing the battery, didn't work either. BIOS is updated to latest W8 version.

Also with just 1x 4gb in one slot, the problem stays the same: laptop doesn't boot. (Also tried for the other one of course to make sure the problem is not that one of them is broken.)

Any suggestions? I'm kind of desperate, so all help is greatly appreciated! Thanks all in advance!

(I'm sure I've forgotten to post some important information, so please ask.)

About the error given: in W7 it ends in an endless loop of rebooting and saying that there is a unspecified problem that causes it to reboot. In W8 it just shuts down immediately.

If the system works with the original RAM, the new memory is either incompatible or faulty.

Thanks, but the memory should be compatible and as I wrote I also tried to boot with only one of the 4 gb modules and after that the other one. In both cases it failed, so that could either mean that both modules are faulty or that the problem is something else...

I also have a L501X bought December 2010 with an i3 370M and 2 X 2GB ram and just tried to upgrade the ram with a 2 X 4GB kit from Corsair p/n CMSO8GX3M2A1333C9 and it just goes into a boot loop when trying to start. latest BIOS is installed. I also noticed in my BIOS that the memory speed is 1066 MHZ, but my service tag info indicates it should be 1333 MHZ

my original 2 X 2GB 1333 MHZ kit works fine. I'm going to try and get a Crucial kit

With an i3, the memory will run at 1066 MHz.  You need an i7 to see 1333 MHz.

Does the original RAM work correctly?
