XPS 15 (L502x) Fan Running Constantly.
My dell xps fan is running constantly without running any heavy programs like games and stuff.
Don't know what the problem is the processes in the task manager also don't show any large processes. Updated my BIOS and cleaned the vents still
no change.
And all the games which i try to play either lag or don't start up. So uninstalled and updated the Nvidia drivers still no change.
Please someone help me with this.
My xps was normal 2 days ago and now its acting weird!!
Thanks!!

The test result was pass for fan test but still the fan is running at full speed don't know what the problem might be!
Any other suggestions?

Hi rox_rohan,
I’d suggest that you run the custom test on the Processor to check if there is an issue with the fan by following the steps mentioned below:
1. Restart the computer.
2. As the computer boots, press when the Dell Splash Screen appears.
3. When the Boot menu appears, highlight the Boot to Utility Partition option, or the Diagnostics option and then press to start the 32-bit Dell Diagnostics.
Note: In some cases PSA Diagnostics will run first. If you receive an error during PSA diagnostics continue onto 32-bit Diagnostics, Press N for No when it asks you to Continue Memory Tests.
4. Press the key to highlight ‘Custom Test’ Press to continue to 32-bit Diagnostics.
5. Select Processor from the list and click "Run Test".
Please reply to this message with the results.

Hi rox_rohan,
Thank you for providing an update on the status. The fan and the heat sink need to be replaced.

I also seem to be having the same problem. However, the system did not behave this way when I first purchased it. No processes max'ing out the CPU either. I will run the tests as suggested and report back. The unit was purchased March of 2011.

I ran all the suggested tests including some extra (i.e. Fan test). All tests can back passed. Fan still continues to run constantly. By constantly, I don't mean 100%. I would say about 95% though. Also, it does get quite warn near the exit vent on the left side of the laptop. Obviously the temp inside the case is high enough to kick on the fan but the fan does not seem to be able to successfully cool things down for very long.

My same model XPS also started mysteriously doing this last week. I noticed your post is a couple years old. What did you do about the noise or what happened with your computer? I'm trying to decide if it's worth fixing or if I should get a new laptop. Thanks!

My post is actually just a few months old. I haven't done anything yet. I need to look to see if my extended warranty still covers this because I suspect that the software that controls the fan thinks it needs to cool the computer. I also suspect the computer is hotter than when I first purchased it probably because a heat sink is not as effective.
What still baffles me a bit is that the fan seem to be more active when I'm not using the computer (meaning when its on but idle). As I type this reply, it is actually completely quiet and behaving correctly.

Install SpeedFan and you can monitor/plot temperatures. My Dell has also shown random fan behaviour and even after a BIOS update still display incredible simplistic behaviour... The fan is either off completely or droning on for 10 minutes at a time. Will never buy Dell again because of this :emotion-6:
