XPS 17 keeps crashing

I've had my XPS 17 for about two weeks now and it keeps crashing.

It happens every other day when I'm doing nothing special. Just using Firefox for example.

The screen suddenly looks like in the picture I attached.

I can move the mouse cursor for a couple of seconds like in slow motion, then nothing works anymore and I have to press the power button until the computer shuts off.

I updated all the drivers, even the BIOS, but nothing helped.

Any idea what that could be?

Unfortunately (for you) yes: They sent a technician who basically took the whole thing apart and replaced the mainboard. Since that there were no more crashes.

Oh, that´s bad. I have had mine now for three weeks, and had this problem about 4 times, so it's not as bad as yours, but I think if it happens again, I really have to call them. I hoped it would be a simple driver/software issue.

Does it crash or does it freeze?

I have similar problem where the laptop itself freeze and leaves no choice but a hard power off.

Subsequently it did not pass the POST and occassionally started to beep 8 times.

So my issue seems to be with the on-board video card memory and I opened a support ticket with dell.

Like in the first post, the screen gets full of pink squares, for a few seconds I can still move the mouse, but after some seconds nothing can be done, just pressing the powerbutton till it turns of. The next boot asks if I want to start windows normally, or do some repair, so basicaly it's like pulling the plug while the machine is working.

I don`t know if its a crash or a freeze in english? What's the difference? At least I don't get beeps so POST is doing fine after such a crash/freeze.

In contrast to the first poster, all my squares are allways pink/magenta, on his "screenshot" I see some yellow ones. For me this also happes out of nothing, doing nothing special only i.e. reading websites. The Machine does not even have to be doing anything, i can have loaded a website 5 minutes ago, and just reading what is already visible, when it happens, so basicaly it really can happen any time, which is scary, if I'm going to migrate productive work to my new laptop.

This has happened to me three times since I got the thing. The first two times it was able to recover on reboot, but this last time my PC is now a doorstop (Windows 7 reports an unrepairable problem and I can't even boot into Safe Mode or do a System Restore from the DVD).

I guess I have a tech visit in my future...

I have had my computer for 2 days - XPS.  4 system freezes on day one (before I even added any of my own programs).  7 freezes today.  System scans don't reveal any problems.  I get no error messages except to say there was an unexpected shutdown.  It seems to happen after the computer has been inactive for a while (I think)...anyone else having this problem?
