XPS M1530 Service Tag

I purchased a Dell XPS M1530 in December of 2007. In July of 2012 the infamous NVIDIA video chip problem struck. (No power-up). I replaced the Motherboard with a refurbished one and need to change the Service Tag in BIOS. What are the steps necessary to acomplish this?

Hi XPSRon,

Welcome to the community.

To Update the Srv Tag, please follow these steps:

  1. Download the Dell Client Configuration Utility toolkit from here:

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDetails/DriverFileFormats?c=us&s=bsd&cs=04&l=en&DriverId=R266721

    1. Install the utility. It take less than 1 minute to install and only takes a few MB’s of space.  NOTE: If installing in 64 bit Windows, the installation path will need to be changed to C:\Program Files\Dell\CCTK, NOT C:\Program Files (X86)\Dell\CCTK

    1. Once installed, open a Command Prompt. In XP, click Start, Run, type cmd and press . For Vista and 7, click Start, in the Search box, type cmd. When the CMD appears at the top, right-click and choose Run as administrator.

    1. At the prompt, type cd\ and press . At the C:\ prompt, type cd  program files\dell\cctk\x86 and press . NOTE: If 64 bit windows, it will be x64 instead of x86.

                5. At the C:\Program Files\Dell\CCTK\x86 prompt, type cctk   --asset=######   (with                   ###### being the asset tag the customer wants to use) and press . NOTE: There is a 10 character limit for an asset tag.

6. It will take up to 30 seconds to process. If successful, it will drop back to a C:\Program Files\Dell\CCTK\x86 prompt.

If your receive an error, check the syntax and try again.

Note :   You must reboot to make sure the asset tag change was successful.

Let me know the findings.Glad to be of assistance.

 Thanks & Regards

DELL-Ravi M, The utility donwloaded and worked as described, many thanks. Unfortunately what I need to change is the Service Tag, the command --asset=########## changes the Asset Tag, not the same as the Service Tag. Is there a different command for the Service Tag? Is there a help or doc for this utility?

Thank you for replying,

Yes, you are correct, Service Tag: The five to seven character service tag information. This is not a customer changeable field.

Let me research little more on that; will get back to you on this soon.

Glad to be of assistance.

Thanks & Regards

Hi XPSRon,

Could you please let me know the manufacturer of the motherboard? Also, did you try flashing the BIOS it   might help? Also, I would like to know if in the BIOS you see any service tag listed.

Because, if you do that means motherboard has already one associated to it. In that case I need to check if something can be done or not.

Glad to be of assistance.

Thanks & Regards

Dell-Ravi-M,

Not sure who the MB manufacturer is, but the refurbished MB I purchased was a Dell 0MU715. It had a Service Tag of

when I went into BIOS to check it after initial install. This appears to be a valid Dell Service Tag as Dell reconized it when I looked it up. Strange thing is, when I ran the CCTK utility and changed the Assest Tag to my original Service Tag, the BIOS Service Tag changed to

.

So why would changing the Assest Tag change the Service Tag to this unknown Service Tag ID.

Hi Ron,

Sorry to ask another question in between. I would like to know if  you have tried flashing the BIOS, did that work?

May I know if the service tag field is blank or shows not installed when you run the asset tag utility?

Also, as I mentioned the srv tag is not a customer changeable utility see if this command helps:

ASSET /s XXXXXXX    (The X's represent the Service Tag you are trying to enter)

Glad to be of assistance.

Thanks & Regards

Hi Ron,

That’s a very good question, I am working on this. Could you add me as a friend and  send me all 3 srv tag’s.

One for your  system and other for the motherboard  and the last whoch is currently showing up.

Also this might help:

Asset.com is a software program to write text information directly to the BIOS. Typing ASSET.COM at a DOS prompt will display these three fields.

  1. 1. Service Tag: The five to seven character service tag information. This is not a customer changeable field.

  2. 2. Asset Tag: This is a ten character field used to store information that can be used by companies to help track systems. This tag is entered into the machine by the user via using the ASSET.COM program and is displayed by the SETUP program. To change the Asset Tag information, boot to the Asset Utility disk and type ASSET.COM new_asset_tag where new_asset_tag is the new asset tag information to be entered.

  3. 3. Property Ownership Tag: This is an eighty character field used to display personalized information about a system. This tag is entered into the machine by the user via the ASSET.COM program and is displayed on the boot screen (center justified if less than 80 characters) just above the Dell logo. To add or change the Property Ownership Tag information, boot to the Asset Utility disk and type ASSET.COM /o new_owner_tag where new_owner_tag is the Propterty Ownership Tag information to be entered.

Glad to be of assistance.

Thanks & Regards

I have not trie flashin BIOS, can't see how that would help since Service Tag is stored in NVRAM. Where can I get the Asset.com utility?

Hi Ron,

You can download it from: ftp.us.dell.com/.../BR105717.exe

When the File Download window appears, click Save to save the file to your hard drive.

Browse to the location where you downloaded the file and double-click the new file to create the diskette set.

Insert a blank diskette then click Continue.

After all the files have been copied to the last diskette, click Finish.

then try this command:

ASSET /s XXXXXXX    (The X's represent the Service Tag you are trying to enter)

Glad to be of assistance.

Thanks & Regards

Ravi,

That .exe and command does not work. Appears that if my Service Tag was Blank, it would allow me to set it, but if a Service Tag exist, it will not change it. It appears the 'tool' needed is available to Dell techs only, not the general public. If that is the case how would I go about having a Dell Tech connect to my laptop and run the software to remove the existing Service Tag (if that is even possible). I understand the sensitivity surrounding the ability to change a Service Tag, but if I had not bought a Laptop with a poorly engineered GPU (or at least that is the general consensus of other users with much more engineering experience than myself), I would not be having this issue. I just want to get my Laptop set back to the way it was pre-GPU destruct.

A Dell laptop purchased in December of 2007 would most likely be out of warranty. If you had 4+ years of use before YOU personally replaced the Motherboard with a refurbished one you are now completely out of warranty.  The Service Tag should not hinder the functionality or operation of any OS installed on the laptop.  Since you are out of warranty, Dell should not help or provide with any support.

Again, changing the Service Tag will not affect your functionality and this will most likely void your refurbished warranty unless you bought a Gray Market item from
a non-Dell outlet or partner.  Contact the company you bought the motherboard from.

I have a Dell xps system.  The Service tag has some how been erased from the CMOS. This happened since I purchased the computer. If this is not changeable by the end user, then how did the service tag get erased?  Secondly, when the service tag is not in the CMOS, no recovery disks nor online system detect at the Dell website work because they do not identify it as a DELL computer.  System recovery and software recovery are impossible.  Only the operating system installs and nothing else.  So I need to have the Service Tag written to the CMOS.  How is this done? The machine is out of warranty but I would pay to have it done online if it was possible.
