XPS M1710 cold boot issue

I just got this laptop a few days ago and right when I took it out of the box it wouldn't turn on? I hit the power button and the power light came on and stayed on but nothing else happened? I thought OK maybe the battery is dead so I plugged it into the wall and it booted right up. I then charged it for about 3 hours and thought all was good. I then unplugged it and went to bed. In the morning I could not get it to boot up again? same thing I would hit the power button and just the power light would come on nothing else. I plugged it into the wall again and it booted right up and then I took off the AC adapter checked the battery level and it said 100%? I ran it for 3 hours no problems it started up rebooted everything with no issues. Again I charged it up took it off the charger and the next day same issue? So it seems the only way I can turn the laptop on from cold is to plug it into the wall 1st, start it up then I can disconnect it until the battery is dead? Anyone have an idea what is going on?

After 3 hours with tech support and flashing to the latest BIOS nothing has fixed it. they are sending me a new system. This is the strangest bug I have ever seen. At first you would think it is the battery but it can't be it runs great off the battery once it is started? Oh well a new laptop is on the way ... I really have to thank Dell support they did a great job unfortunately there was nothing that could be done to fix it. I am very happy that I can keep using the laptop until the next one arrives and that they supplied me with a pre-paid postage stamp for the return of the defective system. :)

I just posted a message with the same issue, I've had my lappy for a few months, and this issue just developed.  Hopefully Dell will be kind to me on this.

Yeah I just read it. There is someone else with the same issue that posted as well. I assume Dell must have got a bad batch of capacitors or some other hardware related electrical item that is causing this. I am sure there are lots more out there with this issue.

I have the exact same problem on my Inspiron 9400. Unfortunately, I can't afford to loose it for a few days. I can't imagine telling my boss that I won't work for a week because I can't start it with the battery.
