XPS M1710 when booting doesn't display anything...........

My XPS M1710 (Dual Core model) when booting doesn't display anything(there is a slight glow from the screen but blank), then once the boot sequece has supposedly finished, I'm left with a totaly blank screen(the LCD has shut off) which responds to nothing. The power indicator is on, but after booting, the HDD indicator is inactive. Whats happened? Any ideas please?
I do have another year and a bit of warranty(which it seems Dell haven't recognised, luckily I have proof).

Hold down the Fn key and turn on your notebook, let it run diags.

Also, if you have an external monitor, try connecting that.

No external monitor. Tried as you suggested holding down the Fn key and switched on notebook six times:first time kind of responded, it displayed the primary colours with a few others went through a brief sequence of tones which then kept repeating with the function lights up top lighting in sequence, that's where it just kept doing this over and over. Other five times nothing  different to how I reported first time round.

Ok, your LCD is fine, it's your video card.

The pretty strobe lights are the LCD self-test.

Ring up Dell and tell them you need a video card/motherboard replacement done. They will make you run the same test, but at least you know where this is headed.

I must admit, I thought it might be the videocard: I forgot to mention just before this occured a strange collection of blocks appeared when I started my machine up which continued until the machine just ' spat the dummy out'. Well thanks for your help, I assume this will be covered under the warranty(which is accutaly three years, I got an extra year for free with a promotion at the time but didn't notice when purchased)?
