XPS M1730 Black screen when loading windows

So I just got my laptop yesterday. And this morning when i turned it on it loaded normally but once it went to load windows the screen went black. It says windows is loading at the bottom but once it actually goes into windows it goes black. Being I as payed alot of of money for this laptop I wouuld expect it too work. Any suggestions before I call Dell? Specs are:

Do you ever see the desktop or is it just a black screen? Or is the black screen there for just a couple seconds?

How did you resolve this issue?  I just received my XPS M1730, and on AC power it boots up fine but on battery power, it fails to boot up every time.  On battery power, I see the BIOS screen, then I see the RAID information, then I see the Microsoft Windows with the bar at the bottom of the screen, then it goes blank.

Thanks!  I am running a modded nVidia driver, since Dell does not have any video drivers on their website for Vista 64-bit.

I had a simliar problem ..it was caused by a Nvidia driver

I am having this issue. The links you posted don't work. They route me back to the main page of the forum. Can you direct me to the correct place? I have tried the OEM nVidia driver from Dell and modded nVidia drivers. They all seem to have issues. I am currently running the 12/07 driver release, version 7.15.11.6751.

When I updated Nvidia drivers to version 175.32 from the Nvidia website I had a problem with my Dell M1730 Vista Home Preimium system, when booting from battery the screen went blank.  I tried several suggestions and nothing worked. I then restored to the original factory shipped drivers Nvidia 156.61 and the problem was solved.

I think this may solve your problem. It took care of this issue for me. Check out this article... certainly good news for all of us who are notebook gamers! Thanks nVidia!!!!

My XPS M1730 has not had even the slightest hiccup since I installed the 179.28 driver. I normally uninstall and use NVLCleaner before installing new drivers. I forgot and installed directly over the modded driver that I had been running. Nonetheless, it is running so well that I may stop calling this machine a lemon. I have made a backup image of the installation just in case I ever need to restore it to its pristine state. (It ran so before that I did not care and was only backing up data files.)

Nope ..same problem as before :(
When using the new Nvidia 179.28 drivers on My Dell M1730 Vista Home Premium GeForce 8700M system everything goes "black" when using battery power.  Everything is fine when using the adaptor power supply. This is the exact same problem I had with Nvidia 175.32 drivers released last summer. Others have reported the same issues. Once again I have to go back to the Dell supplied factory drivers 156.61. Extremely disappointing .

Sorry to hear that. We are approaching a month since I installed the new drivers from nVidia and the problem has never returned. Did you notice that Dell has posted an updated driver of its own? You might try installing them from the Dell support site. I am not sure if they were tweaked by Dell of not. Here is the link for downloading the "official" new driver from Dell:

Nvidia recommends disabling any antivirus software prior to installing drivers. You might want to give that at shot.

There are some driver clean up utilities out there that might be helpful removing all traces of old driver files before installing newer drivers. Here is one I have used before:

 I  have already tried all of your suggestions ..including the driver cleaners and the lastest Dell driver. I contacted Dell XPS support  ..their response was more or less "go back to the factory drivers ....they are supported". My conclusion .. Dell doesnt support their own drivers , let alone their own hardware. I have been a loyal Dell customer for almost a decade. This system will be my last Dell purchase :emotion-20:

Hi, same problem, I went to NVidia site which scanned my laptop, downloaded and installed latest driver 8.17.12.8026. Driver file is:

280.26-notebook-win7-winvista-32bit-international-whql from here:
