XPS M1730 Random Freeze - requiring a Cold Boot

Hey Guys,

I recently bought an XPS M1730 with the following specs:

XP Pro SP2

200GB HDD

NVIDIA GeForce 8700M GT, running 1920x1200 @ 120DPI resolution

4GB RAM

PhysX H/W

I have applied all the available MS updates, and the drivers are upto date with Dell website, including BIOS version.

Have searched the Forum for similar problems (with an M1730) but found nothing of help.

My Problem:

XP will completely Freeze, this seems to occur totally randomly, can run for a few days or a few hours then freeze - requiring a Cold Boot.

I've checked all the Event Logs and can't find anything of use to resolve this problem

The XP is pretty clean since the system is new, and is running Norton 2008, no games installed, just MS Office 2003, FireFox, Skype, RegCure, TuneUp Utilities 2008, O&O Defrag 10x Security Task Manager, Garmin MapSource, standard Dell bundled appsand a few other similar apps.

SLI is disabled.

Have also run the "sfc /scannow" - but no help.

I have tried disabling as many things as i can think of in the hope of stumbling on something that's causing this freezing problem, but no luck to date.

I have not yet tried upgrading to SP3, wanted to leave this till last since it's still a Release Candidate version.

Any help/advice would be great - thanks.

Have you actually used RegCure or Tune-up? those utilities are so '98 it's ridiculous. Everytime someone has brought me a computer with registry issues these things just happen to be on it.

Yes, I have used these utilities with great success, to tune up/speed up the PC, not many different PCs, never had any problems with these.

You've just bought a brand new Notebook with pretty much the fastest gear you can buy in and yet one of the first apps you install is that stuff....why!

Do a fresh install while system hasn't got much stuff on and leaver that stuff off.

Honestly, you may have had good experiences with those programs in the past, but I can say the same thing for going golfing in a thunderstorm. I can play a lot of rounds without ever getting struck by lightning. But when it happens...
