XPS M2010 Problem

Hi

Just over 1 year ago I purchased a Dell M2010 yesterday I started having problems with it locking up, I would restart it and then it would lock up again.

I contacted Dell ( My problem is at the moment I am abroad on a very small island) they suggested I re install the Video Driver Radeon X1800 this I did and it seened to solve the problem.

Today while using it it did the same thing and locked up, now the nachine will not start up at all, nothing black screen, lights come on on keyboard and base unit but that is it nothing more.

Help I bought this computer so I could come to remote locations where they do not have equipment to give presentations, Guess what I have to give a presentation that is why I am here and have no other way of accessing my info.

Hi,
Have you backed up all your data on it? if yes and you have your XP or Vista cd with you i suggest a format. If it was driver related you could have used a driver cleaner to totally remove the driver before you reinstalled it. Now it wont even boot you in a bit of trouble.
Does the bios screen even show up? if not i suggest you then ring Dell again.

When powering it on, press the F12 key during the POST to access the boot menu.  This will allow you to run pre-boot system assessment diagnostics.  It could be some bad hardware.  For example, if you have 2 DIMMs of RAM, maybe there is something wrong in one of them, preventing bootup.  The diagnostics might help you identify it, and then you can temporarily remove the bad DIMM (memory stick) and boot up with only half your RAM.  At least then you'd be able to access your data, and you can buy a replacement stick when you have time.

If you are not able to view your monitor long enough to even see the POST screen (that says "Dell" and other stuff), then you might need to connect an external monitor (that you borrow) to your DVI port on the back so you can see enough to run the diagnostics.

If you *are* able to run diagnostics and everything is ok, you might want to try booting into Windows safe mode (you didn't say which OS you're on).  If you can boot into safe mode, you might be able to do stuff like rescue data or restore a system restore point via Control Panel in Windows to back-out any offending system drivers (if you installed something recently).

Hi

Thank you both for your advice unfortunatly it will not start up at all now, I have contacted DELL and they have advised me, after a few tests, taking memory out swapping memory around etc that they now believe that it is the motherboard.

My next problem is that I am now not in the USA I left last Wednesday to work abroad for 3 months, and am getting the motherboard sent to my USA address, they will then send it to me and I have to have it fitted here, my next problem is there such thing as any ''plans'' dismantling reassembling paperwork as I would like to give this to the person that does it, as where I am no one has experience with these not even the DELL agent and there is only one in the whole country.

It is not an option to mail it back it will never make it in one piece or never make it at all.
