Hi

A 9-Cell battery should give anywhere between 3-4hrs of battery. and a 6hr standby time(Ideal Value).

This again will depend on individual system configuration. Let me give you a classic example, as you said your old XPS gave you around 4hrs, i have a Studio 1555 and the 9cell gave me around 5-6hrs, now even after 2yrs it gives me 3hrs.

XPS systems have more processing power, mainly the GPU (Graphical Processing Unit) in XPS it would be Nvidia. Nvidia have High end GPU's which drain the battery a lot faster than the other Graphic cards.

NVIDIA Power Management

You may have to adjust the internal settings to reduce the GPU usage, here is a screen shot of how ATI saves backup time.

This is what you can try

1) Charge the battery fully upto 100% (preferably 30mins more once its shows 100%)

2) Discharge the battery completely (2-3%)

3) Charge it fully again.

4) Change the windows power plan to 'Power Saver' as well as in the Nvidia control panel. Now the estimated backuptime shown by windows is not all that accurate, it varies as per usage.

5) Use the system (Running any applications or videos drains the battery faster)

6) Time it and let me know how long it lasts.
