Thanks to you both for your suggestions. :smileyhappy:
I ran the extended diagnostics which everything checked out good. I then used the F12 key to start a repair using the OS disk that came with the laptop. It is now stuck at C:\WINDOWS> and is asking for a password. I've never created one and don't choose to. I know there must be a way around this. Your reply will be appreciated. Thanks!
i suggest you repair ur windows vista installation using the original cd u used..boot the comp to cd drive and let the vista initial installation files be copied..as u proceed as if u were gonna reinstall the entire os...u will come across an option to repair...choose that option...from that onwards i tink its easier for u to progress....hope it helps....windows vista is extremely easy to repair in case of corrupt mbr etc...only thing is u must have a vista copy to do so..
Thank you. This laptop came with MS Windows XP Media Edition ???? I've never understood that. Its only a year old. I am re-installing from the orig cd and chose repair, thats when I get a prompt that asks for administrator password. Its going along smoothly, I just need to know how to bypass a password, as I've never created one.
I got past the administrative password screen and was able to continue with the installation. The OS cd that came with the computer is MS XP Professional, and it installed just fine. I am unsure as to why it came loaded with XP Media. The one thing I don't like is that it forced me to do a password.
The problem is when it boots up I get the error message: "System Shutdown initiated by NT authority\system. Windows must now restart because the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service terminated unexpectedly" . It sits there and re-boots over and over.
I have a fix that I downloaded but it does not stay up long enough to run it. Any suggestions?

Run the extended Dell diagnostics (F12 at boot) on the hard drive.
