XPS will not record using Adobe Audition 1.5

When I installed Audition I had never recorded audio on the computer. I tried the Windows utility that records for 60 seconds and it worked. Audition does not record no matter what settings I use. The Dell people have no solutions. The adobe forum has multiple issues with Windows XP Pro. Is it possible that I cannot record audio, period? Any and all commnets are greatly appreciated.
