Xps M1710 half screen is dim?

1 & 1/2 year old Xps M1710. the left side of the screen is gone dark, but the right side remains fine. I had an idea that this may be due to a dodgy invertor or CCFL... but upon doing some reach round the forums i catn seem to find a similar case.

i have read that the CCFL failing will cause the screen to go dark, but my screen is only half dark and i am wondering if this is due to it being a 17" as it may have two CCFLs in it? or could it be the inverter? I'm off here now to conect it up to my desktop monitor & see what the result is ther. but the vid card seems fine as it still has had no graphics issues such as tears or lines.  oh and drivers & bios all up to date before you ask. I'm hoping its only the invertor as i dont fancy trying to replace a CCFL. any help much appericated d00ds :)

Some screens have more than one bulb - and if one fails, you can see partial darkness.  The inverter is not the faulty part - if it fails, the screen will be totally dark.

Twirl, to help me with a problem (screen completely dark, but with a shadow of what should be there) could you tell me what a CCFL is?

Thanks

Hi john,

The CCFL is a Cold cathode fluorescent lamp; the backlight in your screen. the power supply for your laptop is a transformer turning down the voltage to the requirements for your laptop. but the screen backlight requires more voltage than the rest of your computer and this is controlled by the inverter which supplies power to your backlight. 9 of 10 times the prob seems to be the invertor. and by the sounds of your problem i'd say it is the invertor, as you did not mention any flickering, shades of pink/red, or hissing. the ccfl backlight is the same as the long tube lightbulb you'd see in a store or office, as i'm sure you have probably noticed a bad on of these at some stage.

I've been looking into this prob of mine for a few days now, but it looks like i'm outta luck & I need to replace the CCFL in my screen. :(

not looking forward to trying to repair it.

first connect an external monitor & confirm its not the graphics card at fault.

if you are going to try and fix this yourself the inverter would be my first point of call, even if you think it may be the backlight bulb (ccfl) because an invertor is cheap & relatively easialy to replace compared with the bulb.

here is a link that may be helpful to you.

and a quote from this link below.

"After that I took a closer look at the laptop LCD and noticed that the screen is not completely black. The laptop screen still works but the image is very very dull, you barely can see it. It means that the screen still gets data signal from the video card, but for some reason the backlight lamp doesn’t work.
From my experience I know that this problem can be related the lid close switch, faulty inverter board or bad backlight lamp. I checked them one by one."
