Use Dell Command | Update to install Dell Thunderbolt™ Dock (TB15) drivers for Latitude E5570 / 7275 / 7370 / Precision 3510 / 5510 / XPS 15-9550 / XPS 13-9350 & XPS 12-9250

Dell provides the Dell Command | Update Application on a business client supported platforms to simplify the BIOS, firmware & driver update experience. This application is located under the "Systems Management" section of the Dell Support website (www.dell.com/support). Be sure to pick your system type from the list or enter your service tag to ensure you get the right version for your system.

  • Install the Dell Command | Update v2.2.0 available for the system in the "Systems Management" section to obtain the latest firmware and drivers.

NOTE: The application allows users to download and install the latest firmware and drivers on their systems, including

  1. System BIOS
  2. Intel Thunderbolt Controller Driver

Other than above automatic installation, it’s recommended that users download and install the Dell Dock Firmware Update utility (expected to be available to download by August 2016) and Intel HD Graphics Driver manually.

Dell Thunderbolt™ Dock (TB15) Installation Guide for Latitude E5570 / Precision 3510

The latest BIOS, drivers and Firmware can be downloaded at the Dell Support website (www.dell.com/support). Dell highly recommends installing the following BIOS / Drivers step by step in the prescribed order to ensure optimal performance. Failure to install BIOS, drivers and Firmware in this document may result in undesirable performance.

  1. Connect the AC adapter to the Dell Thunderbolt™ Dock (TB15) and then connect the Thunderbolt™ 3 (Type-C) connector to the computer.
  2. Search your system model name under Select a Product selection or enter the service tag of your system to locate Drivers & downloads page on the Dell Support website (www.dell.com/support). Change the OS to view all available updates for your system.
  3. Flash the latest Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) available for the system. This is posted in the "BIOS" section.

  3. Then follow the recommended steps of connecting the AC adapter to the TB15 dock first and then attaching the Thunderbolt cable to the computer.
  4. Power on the computer with the docking station connected.

I'm using DisplayPort (tried both regular and mini) and the screen also fails at least once a day. Sometimes (like now) the screen doesn't start at all even from cold boot.

All drivers updated, tried with multiple cables.

The idea of this dock is stellar but the execution is sub-par.

Suffices to say I am also a VERY unhappy customer.

Update:

I had a pretty positive experience which I posted earlier but after updating the display driver from Dell's website to get the WiDi working on my 9350, now I'm having the problems that others have been experiencing. HDMI disconnects, etc. 

Waiting to see if Dell posts any future updates...

This has to be the single worst product I've ever used. Just completely another round of updates, shutting down completely in-between. It asks me to approve the dock and the cable, five seconds later they disconnect. Rinse and repeat with this junk.

I gave up and contacted support. They spent 2 hours on my PC (another 2 hours of productivity wasted) doing things I've already done. They are supposed to get back with me today on what to do next.

I have mDP to DP (mDP on dock) cable hooked to Dell UP3216Q 4K 32" monitor with no issues - listed as 60Hz and no playback issues, dropouts etc. (second batch of TB15 docks received about 3 weeks ago).

Ok thanks for confirming. Now curious if anyone has dual external monitors connected -- one of them at least at 4k/60Hz. I've ordered a new mDP -> HDMI 2.0 active adapter and a ridiculously overpriced HDMI cable rated at 27Gbps so we shall see what happens.

I assume there's no difference between using the mDP and the DP port on the dock.

There is actually a difference between mDP and DP. They are driven by separate display port hubs. mDP is bundled with HDMI while DP with VGA out. In my experience the first DP hub overheats causing loss of DB and VGA signals.

Good point, I did notice someone (perhaps it was you) who had the overheating issue with one of the chips.

That makes me wonder now if I move my second monitor (HDMI) to the DP or VGA port (separate DP hub), perhaps when I shut off my first monitor (mDP), I'll then be able to turn it on again without the disconnection issue I'm getting with both monitors sharing one DP hub. I'm guessing that may be the case if they operate independently. The second monitor is only FHD; less bandwidth than the other one (UHD).

For all the people having display disconnection issues: if you're using HDMI, does the same thing happen when plugged directly into the laptop? HDMI and DisplayPort cables should be as short as possible and good quality. DisplayPort can be particularly finicky.

I have no issues with the HDMI port in the XPS either, other than the fact that it's HDMI 1.4 which can only run 30Hz @ 4k resolution.

I don't know why Dell went with the same HDMI spec from 2009 for the TB15. It's why I'm forced to screw around with these third party active DisplayPort adapters. 

Hard to say if my USB/Ethernet disconnected due to using the HDMI port on the XPS as this does not happen when using XPS HDMI alone, or XPS HDMI + dock HDMI. It only occurred when I connected the XPS HDMI + dock mDP.

I have no issues with the laptop's HDMI port. I have tried HDMI to an HDMI monitor and HDMI to a DVI monitor using the built-in HDMI port. When I had the TB15 (I have since returned it) I don't recall any issues with HDMI while I did have issues with the mini-DisplayPort.

Did some more testing and made an observation:

I'm able to replicate the scenario where USB and Ethernet won't connect. This is the first I've experienced this issue that so many others have had:

When I swapped my second monitor out of the HDMI (in the dock) to the dock mDP, Windows wouldn't detect my first monitor if connected to the dock HDMI port (using a straight HDMI cable; no adapter). So with the second monitor still plugged into the mDP (using a basic mDP to DVI adapter), I connected my first monitor to the HDMI port in the XPS. All monitors came on... but Ethernet and USB suddenly disconnected. Only the USB ports in the laptop would work.

As soon as I switched back to my original setup (second monitor into HDMI + first monitor into mDP), the monitors came back on and Ethernet + USB reconnected.

I was hoping to get each monitor on its own separate DP hub but couldn't find my VGA cable and don't have a DP to DVI adapter.

I am running a 7710 with three DVI monitors (1680 x 1050).  I have the same setup at two different locations (two different TB15).

I am using the following adapters to switch to DVI:

I'm not having any total dropout via HDMI. Right now, I'm having to run one HDMI cable to the TB15 and a second cable directly to the laptop, so I can reliable use 2 displays. The DP and VGA port just keep dying on me. I do not have a Mini DisplayPort cable to test if that's working correctly or not.

I don't have a mini DisplayPort to confirm, but I'm definitely having an issue with the DP and VGA ports. They'll work fine for a few hours, then just drop out. Rebooting everything will fix it, but it'll drop out again within a few minutes.

The HDMI is working (mostly) fine. I saw mostly, because every once and a while the HDMI signal will just randomly drop out for a second. This might be the cable though, because I've seen it with both the TB15 dock and plugging into the laptop directly. I've used the cable before in another configuration, but I'm not sure if it's getting interference from another cable or just having issues with the HDMI on this unit.

I can confirm I have two 4k monitors up and running, one mDP and one DP. Once I solved the heat issue with a fan I had no issues. Haven't had problems with USB or network connectivity either aside from it sometimes taking a bit for things to wake up after bring the laptop out of sleep mode. 

I didn't mess with HDMI for very long because I found 30hz to be unacceptable performance wise and agree seems silly that they didn't use HDMI 2.0 on this thing. I was having USB issues when I was briefly using HDMI but I believe that was before I had applied a round of driver updates.
