What options are there for a USB C Dock from generic manufacturers that will support the same or similar connectivity capability as this unit?

Am waiting for Plugable Thunderbolt 3 page.

Obviously sounds like Dell are the large scale beta test of Thunderbolt 3!  A bit worried that Plugable will also hold back until the various drivers/firmware are fixed.

I think there's also a StarTech product available.

The Plugable dock sounds quite similar to the TB15 but only charges at 60W so would have to try it first.  I think the StarTech one was 15W so may not fit the bill.

The Plugable dock also doesn't seem to have a Sleep/Wake button so you'd have to have the laptop open.  It also has one DisplayPort and a USB-C to which you're supposed to add a USB-C<->DisplayPort adapter I think ($20).

The dock was functioning fine before the BIOS 1.02 update and the fan was not even that noisy back then.

Then after I do this 1.02 update ethernet and USB started disconnecting at random times and this 300 USD box became a charger plus display port adapter. Come on Dell fix the basic stuff. I bought the product since it came out, I made the 1st driver crisis, and now I updated software to take more ****? PLEASE

UPDATE: After uninstalling everything I can and re-install every thing in order according to the instruction this thing seems to be working again. Left laptop on for a few hours and nothing get disconnected. Need more time to prove though.

UPDATE May 17: The devices (mainly Ethernet and USB) may work or may not for each booting, depend on your luck. USB still disconnects after short period of time. Ethernet and Displayport working fine. Okay I am tired of this. Bought 30 bucks usb-c displayport converter and usb3.0 hub. Thank you Dell and I will appreciate if you fix this thing in the future or can replace us with a actually functioning version.

Thanks for the information - agree with the summary.

I see Razer are doing an external GPU as well that might be something else to think about. for those needing very high graphical capability or the Gamers. Basically a GPU in an external USB 3 chassis with ports.

I returned my dock because of many of the issues described here including display drops and wireless USB devices dropping. I received an updated dock a week ago and while it still runs hot, it resolved all the display issues.

The manufacturing date of the first dock was March 1st 2016. The new dock was April 26th. To confirm the date, check the fourth term in the PPID. First digit is year, 2nd is month, 3rd is date (1-9, A-V); for example April 26th is "64Q".

Dell support rep confirmed that this was "a new version" and likely the USB issues would be resolved by driver updates to come...

...for what its worth...

Hi PHLEGM123,

Is the last term of your new dock's PPID still A00?

My problem with the dock is that my display connected to the Displayport connector is disconnecting after a half an hour / few hours. Looks like an overheating issue.

I also had problems with drivers, but I've removed the Asmedia USB drivers and I am now using the default Windows 10 (x64) drivers for the dock (Asmedia USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller, driver version 10.0.10586.212).

Also I've connected the ethernet cable to the USB-C port of the dock, using the USB-C to Ethernet adapter delivered with my Dell 5510 notebook.

The production date of the dock is 63C, 3th of March.

Hey there, yep - still says A00 so I was a bit skeptical. But I don't know if they up the rev if a chipmaker provides new firmware, etc...

2nd line rep (who has been great on other issues) literally said "I know that this dock is a later version" .

And still no signs of my initial display problems...

I'm using a Plugable USB-C to DisplayPort Adapter Cable from Amazon daisy chained to dual U2415H monitors and haven't had a single issue. I do wish I could use the dock, but this will have to do for now.

If you don't believe me about stopping production on the TB15, just look at the website. It's no longer listed as a product. There is no way to purchase one anymore.

I have a return label sent to me via e-mail from support. They will refund the money as soon as I sent the unit back.

I'm pretty bummed about all the time I've wasted on this product.

Ditto all of the above. I noticed the same thing the other day when I was searching for a similar replacement unit.

What really frustrates me is that with this failed product launch, Dell has probably shot themselves in the foot. With the reveal at CES, I was really excited about the possibilities of Thunderbolt and thought that Dell had really made a forward-thinking, insightful decision. Even the dock itself is clean and offers a great variety of ports. Yet it was all bungled by a poor implementation. What are the chances they'll bother with a thunderbolt dock again, when hardly any other laptops out there use this connector? Very slim, I'm guessing.

As much as I love my two XPS13s, I only bought them because they supposedly integrated so nicely with the dock. I would have gone with Lenovo instead, especially for my work laptop, if I had known how this would turn out. Overall, I'm just really disappointed in how this entire debacle has been handled...

Our dell contact told us yesterday that they announced a hardware fix is being worked on but is not available yet. The fix will also be along side a software update.

After getting my initial dock replaced Ive only been using it to charge the laptop and drive my two monitors. I stopped using the ethernet, audio, and usb ports. Everything else is on the USB 3.0 hub in my monitor. Seems to be working fine except for the rare intel display driver crash.

It was once on the TB15 and XPS15 site and was removed later. I'm currently on this version and no difference.

So will they re-release it as a revision or a different model?

Since 04/28/2016, Dell has NOT added new drivers for the TB15. I am ABSOLUTELY flabbergasted. There are numerous articles on reddit, and across this forum as well among others, of people complaining. This is infuriating that they have just abandoned their own useless product. IT DOES NOT WORK DELL.

I have about had it with Dell. I feel like suing them to death. With all my notes, recorded calls, their epic emails, and all the other reddit threads, it's enough to showcase Dell's incompetence and laziness. I have had it with their awful customer service, their four hour long service calls, all the dropping of calls, and them transferring you with 20+ minute hold times. I have HAD it. I am done with Dell. I'm going to file a BBB complain to return my paper weight. I am done with them
