battery problem - 3 flashing lights.

when i am charging my battery, the battery indicator on my 8100 flashes with 3 amber lights followed by a green light.

when i take out my battery and press the battery button, the battery indicator on the battery itself flashes 3 green lights.

what is going on here? this only started happening after I reformatted.

You'll need a new battery then... When the lights on the battery flash it's knackered..

The batteries for my 8500 cost as follows Standard Battery $99 and Extended $129.  As your laptop is 2 yrs older than mine I don't see your extended battery costing much passed those prices if even that high.

Ahah... Yeah knackered came from the saying as in taking something to the knackers yard, tired, scrap, fubar, shot, duff, etc...

I don't know why he's complaining about Dell charging $150 for the extended battery.  If he wants to really high and outrageous battery prices go get yourself a Sony laptop.  The battery for my wife's 3 yr Sony Vaio PCG-F420 is almost $300.  and we were looking at laptops on the Circuit City Circular before we bought this one.  The new Sony vaio laptops seem nice but I looked on line and a second battery for that one costs about the same if not more.  So $150 is nothing compared with Sony.

Interestingly, my 4000's $99 (at the time) battery ids itself as a Sony LIP868NLDLP  battery!!
