change service tag number stored in bios
I bought a Inspiron 7500 brand new in July of 2000 and the motherboard failed. Iwas able to locate one online for about a third of the cost of a new one. However the board was used and it has a different service tag number stored in it. Is there any way of editing the bios so that it will carry the service tag number that was assigned to my machine when it was built. I have a knack for details and I would like it to match the tag imprinted on the bottom of my laptop. Especially if I ever go to sell it. Thank you, Joe

Thank you for using Dell's Community Forum.
The asset.com program should let you change your service tag to the correct one.

Hello, I tried running the asset.com however I get a error message "This machine does not support an Asset/Service Tag" the program is version 1.06 is this the most current or should I be using a different one. Also I have read that the bios chip on the Inspiron 7500 is removable is this true and if so that is where the info is stored correct. So if I switch the chips it will also switch the service tag correct. I just couldn't see sending this to Dell to have a new motherboard the cost would have been about a $1000. More than the cost of a new laptop

John is 100 % right .
I am surprised about dell moderator as they should know that there is only one program able to change the tag number : SVCTAG .

I'm trying to remove the service tag from my Inspiron 8000 and I get the following error:
Error: Cannot change the Asset/Service Tag.
Please ensure the tag is in a correct format,
and the SETUP password is disabled.
Any ideas?
