display not returning from sleep mode

the power settings on my inspiron 5150 are as such:

plugged in:
monitor off: 30 min
hard disks off: 1 hour
system standby: 1 hour
system hibernate: never

battery:
monitor off: 10 min
hard disks off: 15 min
system standby: never
system hibernate: 30 min

I have the laptop plugged in and I'm having the following problem, the screensaver kicks in after 10 minutes of inactivity and then about 30 min, my display goes black. When I want to use my computer again, the display won't come back. I've moved the mouse (both trackpad and extenal), trying hitting keys, etc. It never comes back. The only solution is to close the lid thus sleeping it, and then opening it back up again, it's a bit of a pain.
Any idea what's wrong?

Plugged in:never to all

Screen saver:right click on desktop/properties/screensaver and change the setting. I have mine set at 1 hour.

hmm, ok. the thing is, I don't mind the display going to sleep, I just don't understand why it's not coming back. I figure having it goto sleep will save the life on display, so I'd like to have that, just have it be able to come back. Or is that not an option?

Don't worry about your display life unless you leave it on all the time. If I leave my computer for awhile, I put it into Standby. (Start/Turn Off Computer/Standby). I don't have it set to go into Standby when I close the lid either. I do it manually since I got some weird stuff once. Out of Standby, either open the lid, or if the lid is open, press the power button.

FWIW I have read a bunch of negative posts about the 5150 so there may be some hidden issues with your machine.

I would try three things.

(1)Flash the system BIOS

Dell Inspiron 5150 Dell System BIOS

(2)Flash the video BIOS and (3) update the video driver (Specific to the video adapter you have in your system).

ATI Mobility Radeon 9000

nVidia GeForce FX Go5200

Did you try any of the three things I suggested?  I have seen these kinds of problems before and typically they can be resolved by updating 1) system BIOS, 2) video BIOS and/or 3) video driver.  I am not a certified Dell Representative but I do work with Dell computers all days long.  If you are having a problem with your display not working after resuming from a power management event (like standby or hibernate) they one of the three steps above should fix you up.  If you have tried all three thing and you are still having the problem, then I would recommend calling tech support (I know that isn't fun) and see if they can trouble shoot with you.

thanks, I have done all those without luck.

I guess I'll give tech support a call :/
