driver for multimedia audio controller

Hello forum,

I convinced a friend to buy a Latitude D600 used laptop with a french version of Windows on it, I told him i could install a new English Windows on it which i did but after reformatting the disk the drivers for the sound card (and other devices) are gone. In Device Manager under Other devices there are 6 yellow exclamation/question marks beside the following:

Ethernet Controller

Multimedia Audio Controller

Network Controller

O2Micro SmartCardBus_Reader

PCI Modem

Video Controller (VGA Compatible)

I've downloaded the drivers on the dell support site but can't reinstall via Device Manager/reinstall driver... i burned the drivers to a cd and also copied them to disk but still the are not recognized.

Please help,

thanks,

dogface

dogface,

This might help get the drivers recognized.

a. Install Dell Notebook System Software (click the + sign next to System Utilities). Restart.

b. Next  install the Intel Mobile Chipset driver (click the + sign next to Chipset). Restart.

c. Finally install the Sigmatel audio driver (click the + sign next to Audio) and other drivers.

Get these from D600 XP drivers. There is a dropbox to change operating system if the one you installed is not XP, but win2000 is the only other OS supported.

Jim

PS please mention OS whenever starting a new thread.

Thanks Jim, that worked, the audio now plays.

Can you help me with the other devices? Which other drivers do i need to install from the same webpage to get everything working again?

in Device manager these are the 5 problems:

Ethernet controller

Network controller

O2Micro SmartCardBus_Reader

PCI Modem

Video Controller (VGA Compatable)

mucho thankos,

dogface

P.S.  the OS is XP pro (SP2)

dogface,

The support site can tell you the components if you know the service tag number on the bottom of the computer.

System Information

There is a utility that scans the system and can find the tag and the current configuration. When you know the component names its easier to figure out which drivers to use.

If it turns out there is a TS-L462C Cd rom/burner, I advise that you do not use the firmware DE07 because it is defective and can cause noise when playing audio.

For O2Micro SmartCardBus_Reader click the + sign next to 'chipset'.

'Pci modem' is probably Conexant D480 under 'communication'.

The Video Controller must be the ATI driver under 'video'.

Jim

edit: there is a Quickset utility under 'applications' that you need for the Fn keys for volume and screen brightness to work and some other functions.

Thanks Jim,

That helped, now there are only 2 problems:

Network Controller (I installed Intel PROSet Wireless but there is still a driver problem)

PCI Modem (I installed the Conexant D480 driver but didn't work.)

thanks,

dogface

dogface,

Sorry for the delay. I'm out of ideas anyway, except wondering if the modem is necessary. If not I wouldn't worry about its driver. The Conexant had 3 or 4 items to be downloaded. I don't know anything about their order or importance. The 'General Hardware' board might be more helpful -- see the Navigation links on the left of this page.
