e1405/640m with 4GB RAM

Folks,

I've just put in 4GB of RAM into my  e1405/640m Inspiron laptop,

T7200 Dual Core

BIOS upgraded to A10 (which seems to be the latest)

As suggested online, I get 3.3GB of RAM, and I'm pleased with that. But I had assumed that it wsa a limit based on a 32-bit operating system. Well, I've now just installed a 64-bit OS (Ubuntu AMD64), which works like a charm.

But the RAM limit seems to be based on the BIOS, which reads all 4GB of RAM, but 3.3G of System RAM, with some sort of message suggesting that the rest is allocated to the system.

1) Is there any way to change the BIOS to read all 4GB?

2) Is there an upgrade of any sort planned for the e1405 BIOS? I'm seeing references to an A11 update for other similar models.

It's not the BIOS that's the limiting factor, but the chipset.  That cannot be upgraded, nor patched around.

Correct, but the chipset does not support memory remapping, so it cannot make all 4G available to the operating system.  The oldest Intel mobile chipset that can, is the 965.  The 945 cannot - and cannot be patched around.

Appreciate the quick response.

I realize that I may not be able to go beyond 3.3GB.

But based on your answer, I just looked up the chipset - the 945GM, is it?

Assuming that's the right chipset, looked up the specs at http://www.intel.com/Products/Notebook/Chipsets/945GM/945GM-technicaldocuments.htm

And per the spec sheet, p 23, the max RAM is 4GB.
