Yes, that's what I suggested above.  If it boots ok then most likely you just have a bad connection and removing/reinserting the whole module will get you back and running.  But first try it without the module.

I am not at all familiar with your model but it would seem that you can remove the entire CD module and get the laptop to boot normally.  What version of Windows are you using? If XP then you should be able to insert the module while the laptop is working and if the CD drive is ok you should get the messages that XP found the drive.  If it continues to tell you it cannot recognize the drive or some other sort of error message it may be that your CD drive is defective.

Thanks for the reply. I have an Inspiron 1100 and XP Professional. I don't think the CD drive is the problem, as it has happened before and the CD drive was fine. I think that somehow the computer fails to recognize it because one time once I got it booted up I could not find the CD drive icon on my Computer screen. So specifically what do you think I should do? Take out the CD bay and try to boot up? Dorothy

at the very least you should remove the drive completely and reseat it

while you're reseatting the drive, have a look at the connectors, do any of them appear damaged in any way what so ever?  Maybe even blow out the bay where the cd-rom fits.  Something appears to be causing a bad connection.
