fan not working properly

My laptop needs to be elevated off my desk about 1/2-3/4 of an inch to keep it cool. If i dont do this my computer overheats and turns itself off. I then can not restart it for about 20 minutes.. any suggestions?

I have a inspiron 1100 with the same problem, dell replaced the mother board as well, which resolved the problem for a few months, however, the problem has returned. Apparently, it overheats after running for a couple of hours and just shuts down without warnings. Based on reading a lot of message threads, the problem relates to excess dust build up on the heatsink device, whatever that is. Believe or not, I hear the best way to resolve is to blow air into the vents in the back of the computer. Here's more info related to this problem
