firewire to expresscard--please help

Hi there in Dell land,
I recently purchased a Inspiron B130 laptop, and it had come to my attenion that it does not come with firewire inputs.  So I called Dell and they sold my a SIIG 3 port cardbus, part number nn-pcm312.  Related to this as well I plan to record music with the B130 and I just purchased a Presonus Firepod 24-bit/96k recording interface.  As I was trying to install the the firepod program it told me it could not read any connections.  The SIIG 3 port cardbus was in the expresscard slot, I plugged in the firepod through the a/c adapter, connected a firewire connector from the input of the firepod in the back to the SIIG.  The firepod cd/rom for installation says there is no connection found.  I think the SIIG casrdbus is not installed right.  Has anyone com accross this before?  All firepod stuff aside, I'm just talking about any SIIG to B130 expresscard problems?  PLEASE HELP!!

I am having the very same problem with the smaller Presonus setup.  Did you manage to find anything that works?  FireWire to USB, is this an option?  I'd appreciate any help you can give me.

Thanks

The B130 doesn't support cardbus adapters, only expresscard. You need the SIG expresscard firewire adapter or similiar.

Thanks Dave.

Anyone have any success or trouble with these things?  Should I wait a few months for the cards to be more widely available and perhaps less expensive?  I've heard that ExpressCard is the next wave of PCMCIA technology.  I'm afraid it may go the way of the 8-track tape.

I've been attempting to figure out the relationships of firewire and USB for several weeks and still don't feel comfortable to write the correct perscription for parts to do what I want to do.  My Dell Inspiron1150 laptop has two USB ports and a card slot (PCMCIA 3.3 mm and 5.0 mm for Type I and Type II cards. It does not support the larger Type III cards). The Canon Tech rep (great support email) explained that my quest to transfer video from my Canon ZR70MC camcorder to a DVD disk is best done using an IEEE 1394 card and cable with supporting software.

Dell literature quotes "However, Dell has only qualified the SCI FireWave I and Dazzle MPEG PCI 1394 adapters for use with Dell computers and only for use with digital video cameras.'' (???) I haven't followed up on the adapter issue.

Dell offers their P/N AO293491 (SIIG P/N NN-PC8312) Firewire 800 Cardbus DV Kit for $83.95. There's quite a few impressive features at www.firewire-1394.com/siig-firewire-800-cardbus.htm including two 1394b and one 1394a (6-pin) ports.

I'm new at this and don't understand much of what I just wrote about.  Good luck. Let us know your final configuration.--Ralph
