how to enable a battery on Inspiron 17R N7110

Have a dell battery adaptor but my computer isn't recognizing it. It won't charge my battery. It says the battery charging isn't enabled. If I check the bios on booting it says the adaptor is 'unknown'. How does one make the adaptor 'known' and how to enable the battery charging?

In order,

1. Try a new OEM Dell AC adapter.  If that doesn't fix the problem,

2.  Replace the DC power jack.  If that doesn't do it,

3.  Replace the mainboard.

Ok. thanks. The odd thing is it was charging before I bought this new battery. Now it won't. I think it has to be something with a setting I can't get to.

The problem is most likely the new battery. There is nothing to change in the BIOS or the OS to make it compatible. If it isn't an official Dell battery from Dell,  it probably is incompatible. Batteries contain circuity that needs to talk to the computer in order to control the charging process. Send it back for a replacement or a refund and try another supplier.
