i8600 Splash screen and What does System Primary password do to the hard drive?

Hi everyone,

I've attempted to look up a few things for the Inspiron 8600 A08 BIOS on Google, Inspiron 8600 forums, and through searching through the Dell forums. I haven't been able to figure out how to tell the Search function to search through ONLY specific forums (and not the entire Dell Community forums) -- if you know, please let me know :)

Here are what I've been trying to research:

1. Is there a way to disable the Dell Splash screen that appears at boot-up? I have seen Dell documents (through the searches) that show you how to do that with other Inspiron and Latitude laptops, but haven't been successful with i8600. Namely, I'd like to see the normal BIOS screen's POST process you normally see on desktop computers. From what I've read, newer laptops are now using Dell's proprietary Dell BIOS?

2. Is there a way to replace the Dell Splash screen with your own logo? This would allow you, for example, to also place your ownership information onto the logo (no need to modify the Asset tag, which is what I'd prefer.) Better yet, if the replacement would allow you to make an animated splash screen with sound like on my older Sony laptop, that would be great! Someone on another forum said that you can find the documentation at support.dell.com, but after searching through the Dell sites, I've concluded that my assumption was correct: Why would Dell endorse the changing of its own splash screen and thus remove Dell's name/ marketing opportunity?

3. What exactly does enabling the System Primary password (which is used for the hard drive) do to the hard drive? My guess is that it does NOTHING to the hard drive itself, but instead is used to tell the BIOS whether to mount the hard drive or not. Giving a false password would tell the laptop to not enable the hard drive. Is that correct? If that's correct, then the hard drive actually isn't really protected then because somebody could still simply unscrew the hard drive module, remove the drive, and use it and/or extract its information on another computer. If the System Primary password indeed does modify the hard drive, what exactly does it do? If it modifies the boot sector, what if a virus corrupts it? How would one then be able to access the hard drive? I see many potential issues if System Primary does modify the drive.

Thank you for any help you can provide me.

Michael

To search only specific forums, use the advanced search.  Once you perform a search, the advanced link will show up.  Click on it and then set up your search.

To answer your other questions, I don't know how to turn off the BIOS splash screen on the I8600.

For the passwords, go HERE

For the splash screen, go HERE

Thanks :) The Advanced Search function will definitely help :)

Nice FAQ you have on your site!

If the Splash program works on the 8600, you can use it to turn off the Dell Splash screen - splash /off.  You can also use it to put a different pic as the splash - 16 color only.

As far as I know, spl2.exe works up through the I8600 and D800.

Hi,

Thanks again for your help. SPL1 doesn't work, but SPL2 (or SPLASH) does. I was able to put the splash screen onto the i8600.

However, after seeing the screen, another question naturally came to my mind:

Is there a way to have the splash screen show the Owner tag, the equipment model, progress bar, and the BIOS revision like in the original splash screen? If you recall, it looks something like this:

Owner Tag

DELL LOGO

Inspiron 8600 Series

PROGRESS BAR

BIOS Revision A08

You would have to edit the pic to add that text then reflash the splash pic.  Read more here and here.

Hi John,

Thank you for the links. My apologies, but I meant to ask about a way to use the splash screen where the laptop dynamically puts the text and the progress bar on top of the splash screen like it does on the original Dell splash screen. This way, whenever you update your BIOS, you wouldn't have to update the splash screen, and you'd also be able to see the progress of the Progress Bar (when the BIOS performs the POST routines)

I've posted some wallpapers and splash screens at http://www.hkss.com/inspiron8600

To get the dynamic content shown, you'd have to find the basic BIOS splash screen in the BIOS code (unless there isn't one and it is just a black backgroundfor the text, or if it's a routine to repeat black enough times to fill the screen) and replace it with the pic of your choice.  Good luck!

Haha... that's what I figured. Of course, I am not a programmer and don't know how to get into the BIOS code :)

You can have ownership information appear on the default Inspiron screen by using Asset.exe and entering the data for an Ownership Tag. The information will then appear above the Dell logo. You can get the program here:

Hi Mike, thank you for the link to the asset utility. Unfortunately, when you use your own splash screen, nothing but the splash screen gets displayed.
