ie7 and skype problem on dell latitude D830

I have the following problem with my latitude which I received 1 week ago :

internet explorer stops working (looses internet access) as well as skype.
ping still works (even ping www.yahoo.com) and also network file access still works.

I have this problem on both nics (wireless and wired), both at home and at work.

My config :
- dell D830
- vista 32
- intel agn wireless nic
- mcafee internet security

I thought : this must be a firewall problem. I disabled both mcafee and windows firewall. If I then also disable the non-active network card (ie. my wireless card when I am connected over wired network or my wired card when connected wireless), the problem dissappears but only after shutting down and rebooting.

Even then, occasionally, the problem re-occurs but less frequent.

I called dell tech support. I installed latest drivers on both nics : no solution.

They said the problem was not unknown to them and that intel would bring out a new driver for the agn network card on the 20th of july.

I am however not convinced that the wireless card is the problem as I also have
the problem with the wired card.

Does anyone have a similar problem?
It is driving me crazy, I have lost so much time over this... and I need this computer for my daily work

I would start the trouble shooting by uninstalling Mcafee Virus Protection and replacing it with AVG which is fully functional, faster, and available for free at http://www.download.com

If it were up to me, Mcafee would be renamed Mcrapee.  This software is bloated and slows many otherwise fast computers to a crawl.  It is also likely to be limiting the network permissions of Skype and IE, thus causing your issues.  If you still have a problem, try your luck with Mozilla firefox, and also see if an upgrade is available for Skype.  Make sure to do both of these after Mcrapee is fully removed from your machine.  Good luck and let us know if this fixes your problem!

Actually,
I found the following workaround :
- I shrunk the partition on which windows vista was installed.
- I installed windows xp in dual boot on the machine together with vista (not so easy)
- I only installed the antivirus portion of the suite, not the firewall and am now using the windows xp firewall.

As you can see the problem can have a number of different causes :
- mcafee
- windows vista
- mcafee and vista combined
- mcafee and vista combined with my network card

I fully agree with you on the quality of the mcafee product. It is sad to say that I ordered this laptop with mcafee to get rid of norton internet security which is very bad also...
