It will last until it brakes. I have a 1998 IBM TP that someone gave me because she bought a Dell 5100 and dropped the IBM in 1999 and the HDD died. I replaced the HDD 1+ year ago and it has not been turned off since. Runs fine, I use it as a print server. So there is dno way to tell.

Theres no way to know. The parts that are mostly likel to fail are ones with moving pieces - so the drive and fans. Drives tend to have a MTBF around 20-40 thousand operating hours, so you can expect a failure in 5 years. The rest is all hit & miss, and not really any way to predict.

Theres not real harm in leaving it on the download at night, but only do it when neccessary.

Notebooks lead rougher lives than desktops.  They're also built with regard to weight, meaning they're not as mechanically robust as desktops.

Never buy a notebook with less than a 3-year warranty, since the other downside of notebooks is that they are far more expensive to repair than desktops.

The main reason laptops don't last as long as desktop is because people abuse them. Use them on a soft surface which make them get really hot. Throw them around or drop them. Just moving it fast while it's running can have some very bad effects on the moving parts/HDD. Yanking the AC adapter cord out of the socket. You would be surprised at some of the stuff that happens to notebook and the people that own them say "Why doesn't it work".

Now that's not to say that the electronics can't just up and die at any time or the HDD goes bad, that happens to desktops to, but most of the time it's from abuse and or excessive heat that kills them.

The company I work for has 2 Dell Inspiron 3800 that are about 4 years old, I use to carry one to and from my job, and they work every day. I have a C600 that I bought used and is 3 or going on 3 years old and it works fine.

You just never know, just like everything else.

When you leave it on all the time, just make sure you have set a display timeout so that the backlight can turn off after some time when not using your Inspiron because notebook backlights often only last 3 years of non-stop use (24/24).

Yes, there are small USB enclusures for this. You can get them for like $5 on eBay.
