installing new BIOS update
I recieved an email about installing an updated BIOS for my studio 1373 laptop. I have now realized that there are 15 different updates that have been issued for my laptop for a variety of things. This is my first computer (Ive had it for 2 1/2 yrs) and didnt know about all this needing to be done. Do I need to install all of the other updates before installing the BIOS update? does that matter? I am a little nervous about doing these operations. Any info is greatly appreciated!

Dell has sent out an email on a BIOS update to fix a problem with lojack.As far as updates go yes there are updates that get sent out and are categorized as,recommended,optional etc...The rule of thumb is,if it ain't broke don't fix it.Unless the update, adds a feature you need, an immediate fix to a problem you are having,etc... i would not bother with the update.You can check the fix an update has or what the update is for by clicking the link on the driver and download page>now click fixes and enhancements drop down arrow.If you feel you need the update install it.
FYI: A failed BIOS flash can render your laptop a giant paperweight,so make sure you have the battery fully charged,and the power adapter plugged into the outlet.

We updated our laptop last night (BIOS) and now the SMART Short Self Test and the Targeted Read Test are both indicated as "Failed."
Major coincidence or arethe two things related to one another? Should have known about the rule of thumb!
And...how worried should we be? *ack*

The two aren't related, but you must replace the hard drive ASAP (sooner than that, make sure you have a backup!)

I like your answer - if it aint broke dont fix it! but today my Dell support center msg popped up saying the BIOS update is critical. If its only for a problem with lojack why are they coding it red-critical? so, is it more of a potential problem to install it or not install it? im confused and nervous about doing it and then having something go wrong. thanks for any more info you may have.

I still have not installed the newest BIOS. I just read the thread where some one did the update and now their computer is working very poorly. I don't know why manufacturers do this. I have had updates really mess things up in the past.

The only thing i know about the update is,it is from dell and the only thing it fixes is a problem with Lojack.I have not found out any other info. yet,except that some users are experiencing problems when they install the update.
