java runtime environment

about six months ago i started getting notices saying i needed to update my java runtime environment program... i dont know how it got on my computer or what it is, so i looked on the website to see what it was.  it said it was intended for software developers or something, but i have nothing to do with developing software.  all i do on this computer is use the internet for school and play games from time to time.  the java program is taking up a large amout of memory, and i was wondering if it is necessary to have it, and what it may be there for.

The Java software is used by many web sites so I would not remove it. This could cause you to have problems in navigating some sites. It is possible to disable the automated update process by opening the Java aplet under the Control Panel in Windows if you prefer. Sun does release updates periodically to include new features as well as security fixes.  If you wish, you may download the latest version manually at http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp.

I prefer to uninstall the older Java versions (and rebooting) before installing a new version of Java. See 'Add or Remove Programs' under the Control Panel if you wish to uninstall an older version before doing an update.
