keyboard gibberish

I plugged in an external keyboard to my inspiron 1501 and ever since then when I use the inspirons keyboard, it responds by printing gibberish, for example, when I hit any letter in the top row of letters I get  a number or symbol. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, any other suggestions?

Check the keyboard settings in the control panel to see what type of keyboard is setup. It sounds like it is set for the wrong type of keyboard.

Mine is set to US keyboard 101/102 keys.

I tried that, it seems to be the right one. Any other ideas? Thanks, Judi-

I would then suspect it to be a defective keyboard if it is setup properly. Does an external keyboard work as it should?

What did they do? If you don't mind sharing as it may help someone else.
