lattitude cp fan
i recently purchased a secondhand lattitude cp laptop ,the previous owner had removed the cooling fan as he thought it wasn't working i have tested the fan and it works fine my problem is both the wires have been removed from the connector which plugs into the motherboard, if i get the wires the wrong way round will the fan run in reverse or will it damage something ,is there a way to tell which way round the wires should be ,also is there a way i can test the fan once it is connected to the motherboard
many thanks

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
If the wires are placed the wrong way, it should not damage anything.
The fan does not provide any type of power output, it only accepts power from the motherboard, so there is no feedback along the wires. That is why it will not damage anything. The fan should not work if connected improperly, so you will know if you have it on right or not. The fan should blow air out of the system, to keep it cool. That is how you will know that it is oriented correctly. Unfortunately there are no diagrams that are detailed enough to show how the wires should be oriented. The only way to truly know (without trial and error) is for someone with an CP or CPi system to let you know how the wires are suppose to go.

thanks for your quick reply,i have tried the wires both ways and neither seem to work i know the fan works, should the fan work all the time or does it have to reach a certain temp before it switchs on , i didn't want to leave it switched on to long in case it fried the cpu
cheers

The system has to reach a certain temp before the fans will be switched on.
If you want to try, connect the fan then boot the system to the Dell diagnostics.
The diagnostics program has a fan test that you can try.
By the time you run the fan test, you should not have had the system on more then 5 minutes.
How do I run the Dell™ Diagnostics?
