mSATA SSD boot disk in M6500

Hi,

This is my first post so please be gentle with me :)

My current workstation: Precision M6500 i7-920XM + FX3800M 1TB + 8GB memory + 2 x 500GB 7200 rpm

I've been searching far and wide with Google for days, trying to find the definitive method for installing and using a mSATA SSD as a boot disk. I did find one comprehensive guide but the drives mentioned are no longer available.

Currently my M6500 uses the 2 x 7200 rpm drives for boot and storage. Please can you tell me if the following method for installation is correct. Also does Dell recommend any third party mini sdd's? If not, are there currently any known issues with any of the current models?

Step 1 - Update to latest Bios(?)

Step 2 - Remove 500GB drives and install mini ssd.

Step 3 - Make sure bios is set to to raid - mini ssd as boot disk.

Step 4 - Install O/S on mini ssd.

Step 5 - Refit 2 x 500GB drives and set as raid disks in bios then format.

Step 6 - Set up Trim for SSD(?)

Many thanks.
